Students at Michigan State University have been cutting back on drinking and smoking. Dr. Dennis Bartell is MSU’s director of health promotion and says the campus becoming tobacco-free is definitely a factor.

“It’s really an indication about how the university looks at health being very important not only for academic success, but also for social success and the development of adults who will graduate,” Bartell said.

Bartell says the findings are part of the State of Spartan Health Survey, which is conducted every two years to assess the health of students on campus. Overall, survey results showed a 9% decrease between 2000 and 2016 in the number of students who said they drank one or more days the previous month.
