New technology designed to reduce crashes is being rolled out by Ford. The company’s Scott Lindstrom says Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection uses cameras in the bumper and windshield. It can help a driver avoid crashes with both pedestrians and other vehicles.

“The driver does need to maintain control of the vehicle,” Lindstrom said. “It works with the driver to help him drive as well as he can.”

Lindstrom says the rollout of the new tech comes after about four years of research and 500,000 miles of testing. It’s available now in Ford Fusions, and will come to other models soon.
