Parents of teenagers who have recently learned to drive are being reminded this week to talk to them about the importance of avoiding distractions behind the wheel. AAA of Michigan spokesperson Susan Hiltz tells WSJM News cell phones are a big problem for teens while driving.

“Teen passengers and cell phone use are really the largest contributors to increased risk,” Hiltz said. “So, that’s something to talk about, and one of the best habits we can all get in is when we get into our cars is to put that cell phone away. Put it in the glove compartment, but forget about it when you’re driving.”

Hiltz tells us teen fatal crashes rose by 10% in 2015, fueled largely by those distractions. She says parents could learn a thing or two, as well. Also, don’t forget to buckle up.
