MLB Playoffs – Division Series (Best of 5)
Last Night

Dodgers 4, Nationals 3 – Kershaw gets save, LA tops Nats 4-3 to win NLDS
Clayton Kershaw got the final two outs to earn his first major league save and finish the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 4-3 victory over the Washington Nationals in Game 5 to win their NL Division Series. Entering with runners on first and second and one out in the ninth inning after 12:30 a.m. on Friday, Kershaw got Daniel Murphy to pop out and struck out Wilmer Difo to send LA to the NLCS against the Cubs. Kershaw was pitching two days after going 6 2/3 innings in Game 4. The 3-time NL Cy Young Award winner was making his first relief appearance since the 2009 playoffs.

Tonight – ALCS
Toronto (Estrada 9-9) at Cleveland (Kluber 18-9), 8:08 p.m.                (Game 1)

Saturday – NLCS

MLB – Cubs to start Lester in NLCS Game 1
The Cubs will start Jon Lester in Game 1 of the NL Championship Series, and the rest of their rotation depends on the health of Kyle Hendricks. Hendricks left Game 2 of the Division Series against San Francisco when a comebacker went off his right forearm in the fourth inning. He had a bullpen session Thursday, and the Cubs are waiting to see how he feels Friday before confirming their rotation. If Hendricks is ready to go, he likely will pitch Game 2. The right-hander went 9-2 with a 1.32 ERA in 15 games at Wrigley Field during the regular season. Lester pitched eight sparkling innings in the Cubs’ 1-0 victory over San Francisco in their playoff opener last Friday.

NHL – National Hockey League – Opening Night
Last Night
Tampa Bay Lightning 6, Detroit Red Wings 4

Lightning 6, Red Wings 4 – Johnson has go-ahead goal, Lightning beat Red Wings 6-4
Tyler Johnson scored a go-ahead power-play goal off a nifty pass from Steven Stamkos midway through the third period and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Detroit Red Wings 6-4 in the season opener for both on Thursday night. Tampa Bay also got goals from Jonathan Drouin, Cedric Paquette, Brian Boyle, Alex Killorn and Valtteri Filppula. Johnson was positioned at the right circle and redirected Stamkos’ feed past Petr Mrazek at 8:34 to put the Lightning up 4-3, just 5 seconds after Detroit was called for too many men on the ice. Thomas Vanek scored two goals for the Red Wings. Frans Nielsen, signed to a $31.5 million, six-year free agent deal by Detroit, had a goal and an assist.

NFL – So far, this has not been the Todd Gurley of 2015
So far, this has not been the Todd Gurley who was the NFL’s top offensive rookie.  Gurley is off to a sluggish start, averaging 2.7 yards per carry and running for no more than 85 yards in any of the first five games. The Los Angeles Rams running back got off much better a year ago when he had had at least 128 yards rushing in four of his first five games. With teams figuring out how to slow him down, the Rams are averaging an NFL-low 284.2 yards a game on offense. The Rams (3-2) still plan to keep giving him the ball early and often, with handoffs and passes, Sunday at Detroit. “He’s a big-play guy and we’ve just got to find ways to give him the football,” Los Angeles coach Jeff Fisher said. The Lions (2-3) are bracing for the challenge of preventing Gurley from having a breakout game. They also hope to keep their distinction as the NFL’s only team that hasn’t given up a rushing touchdown this season.

NFL – Bears, Jaguars trying to make something of difficult season
No matter how gloomy things seem this season, the Chicago Bears insist they are better than the record shows. A few more wins would help their argument. They could start to salvage something from this season when they meet the Jacksonville Jaguars in a matchup of last-place teams on Sunday. “We’re so close,” Chicago linebacker Willie Young said. “And when you go back and look at the film and you see a couple of plays, I guess every game, wins or losses, come down to a few plays. And to see how close we are is a lot of motivation.” The Bears (1-4) were hoping to make a jump in coach John Fox’s second season after winning just six games last season. It’s not playing out that way. Chicago has been hit hard by injuries and inconsistent play and comes into this game last in the NFC North after losing at Indianapolis a week ago. The Jaguars (1-3) were off after beating Indianapolis in London. They still have a chance to climb in the AFC South if they can pick up a rare road win, something they have done just four times in 25 games in coach Gus Bradley’s four seasons.

NBA – LeBron: Union prioritizes help for retired players in talks
NBA players are pushing for more money in the next collective bargaining agreement _ for the players who came before them. Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James, vice president of the NBPA’s executive committee, told The Associated Press on Thursday the union has made getting aid for retired players a priority in their talks with NBA owners on a new deal. The NBA and its players have agreed that the next CBA will include new league-funded programs to help retired players with education and medical expenses, four people with knowledge of the situation told the AP. The people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because talks are ongoing.  In exchange for those programs, and pending full approval from both sides, the split of basketball-related income would remain the same “50-50” deal as it is in the current agreement.
