(Detroit, MI – AP) – The USS Detroit naval vessel has arrived in its namesake city for a commissioning ceremony next week. The $440 million Freedom-class ship docked Friday afternoon on the Detroit River in front of the GM Renaissance Center as hundreds of people watched. It traveled from Marinette, Wisconsin, where it was built. The USS Detroit is designed to work in shallow waters and operate with speed and agility. It can be quickly modified to take on different missions. John Peracchio, committee chair for the USS Detroit Commissioning Committee, says it’s one of the most technologically advanced warships in the U.S. Navy. Following a week of festivities and tours, the ship will be commissioned October 22.
