The public has finally had a chance to feast its eyes on the newly renovated South Haven lighthouse. The plastic tarps covering the structure were stripped away Friday morning to show off the $300,000 in work the landmark has received. South Haven Historical Society President Amanda Creeden tells WSJM News the community has a vested interest in preserving its lighthouse.

“For lakeshore communities, having a lighthouse along the lake, they’re not only beacons for safety, but they’re also symbols for those communities,” Creeden said.

Crews began work in September, removing roughly 10 coats of paint, making needed repairs, and putting 52 gallons of fresh red paint on. Almost all of the money spent on the work came through donations from the community.
