$6 Million In Criminal Justice Grants Announced For Michigan

Criminal justice agencies across Michigan are getting more than $6 million in federal grants to strengthen crime fighting and anti-drug efforts. The money announced Friday by Michigan State Police comes from the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program at the US Justice Department. MSP’s Nancy Becket Bennett tellsWSJM News it can be used a variety of ways.

“We fund drug courts, we fund juvenile community policing programs, we’re funding some prosecution programs, some information technology programs, indigent defense, we’re funding courts, we’re funding law enforcement,” Bennett said.

In southwest Michigan, $100,000 is going to the Southwest Enforcement Team, or SWET. The agency works across several southwest Michigan counties to bust drug rings.
