Twins 5, Tigers 1 – Dozier’s two-run single helps Twins beat Tigers, 5-1
Brian Dozier’s two-run single highlighted a four-run second inning and the Minnesota Twins handed the Detroit Tigers a crucial loss, beating them 5-1 on Thursday. The Tigers were only able to split four games with the lowly Twins, hurting them in the crowded AL wild-card race. Detroit came into the series with a 10-2 record against Minnesota. Hector Santiago (12-8) got the win, holding the Tigers to one run on six hits. Mike Pelfrey (4-10) lost in his first major-league appearance since July 31st. He started the game with a 60-pitch limit, but only lasted 36, giving up four runs on five hits in 1 2/3 innings. The Twins took the lead in the second on Max Kepler’s RBI single, and he moved to third when Miguel Cabrera missed a pick-off attempt.

White Sox 2, Indians 1 – Jose Abreu, White Sox down Indians 2-1
Jose Abreu continued his torrid streak with a home run and single and Carlos Sanchez drove in the winning run in the ninth inning in the Chicago White Sox’s 2-1 victory over the Cleveland Indians Thursday. The White Sox took three of four games in the series to conclude a 6-4 homestead against three playoff hopefuls. The first-place Indians remained six games ahead of the Detroit Tigers in the AL Central. After Omar Narvaez led off the ninth with a single off Bryan Shaw (2-5), pinch-runner Leury Garcia stole second while Avisail Garcia struck out. Sanchez followed with a bloop single to right-center.  David Robertson (5-3) pitched a scoreless inning to earn the victory. Chicago starter James Shields gave up one run on three hits and three walks in six innings, and remained winless in his last nine starts. He was 0-5 with a 10.75 earned-run average in his previous eight appearances.

Brewers 5, Cubs 4 – Brewers temporarily crash Cubs party with 5-4 win at Wrigley Field
Scooter Gennett hit a tiebreaking, two-run double in the seventh inning, and the Milwaukee Brewers spoiled the Chicago Cubs’ first opportunity to clinch the NL Central title with a 5-4 victory Thursday night. Chicago (93-53) was hoping to begin a 10-game home stand with a boozy celebration of its first division title since 2008. But Keon Broxton homered and Orlando Arcia drove in two runs for Milwaukee, making the Cubs wait for the result of St. Louis’ game at San Francisco to find out if their season-long dominance of the Central was complete. The crowd of 41,362 cheered loudly when Hunter Pence’s two-run homer in the first inning against the Cardinals was shown on the video board in left field.

MLB – Cubs clinch NL Central title with Cardinals loss
The Chicago Cubs have won the NL Central, becoming the first major league team this season to clinch a division title when St. Louis lost 6-2 at San Francisco. The Cubs lost 5-4 to the Milwaukee Brewers earlier Thursday night, but captured their first NL Central crown since 2008 when the Giants finished off their victory over the Cardinals. Wrigley Field was empty when Matt Adams made the final out on the West Coast, but a loud cheer went up in the neighborhood around the iconic ballpark and several people honked their car horns.

NCAA Basketball – Prosecutor: Police drove Cleaves home after reported assault
Prosecutors say officers drove former Michigan State basketball star Mateen Cleaves to his home after police responded to a reported sexual assault of a woman at a Flint-area motel. The Flint Journal reports that Wayne County Assistant Prosecutor Lisa Lindsey made the statement to a judge during a hearing Thursday. Defense attorney Frank Manley later told reporters that the officers’ actions showed they “saw nothing that would rise to the level of some type of crime.”

NFL – Vegas stadium clears one hurdle
A Nevada oversight committee has voted unanimously to recommend $750 million in public funding for a stadium project in Las Vegas, where city officials hope to lure the Raiders from Oakland.  The Southern Nevada Tourism Infrastructure Committee recommended raising the hotel tax in the Las Vegas area to help pay for a 65,000-seat domed venue that would be partially financed by billionaire casino mogul Sheldon Adelson. Las Vegas has been hammering out the particulars of the Raiders deal for months, but the project still needs approval from the governor, the Legislature and three-quarters of league owners.

NFL – House seeks review of NFL
House Republicans are calling for an independent review of allegations that the NFL sought to improperly influence a government study into the link between football and brain disease.  GOP leaders of the Energy and Commerce Committee sent a letter to the Department of Health and Human Services’ inspector general stating that a thorough assessment is needed to ensure the integrity of the process for awarding research grants. The league has issued a statement saying that it looks forward to cooperating with the inspector general.
