Twins 8, Tigers 1 – Polanco has HR, 4 RBIs and Twins beat Tigers 8-1
Jorge Polanco homered and drove in four runs, Brian Dozier added three more hits to his torrid second half and the Minnesota Twins beat the Detroit Tigers 8-1 on Tuesday night. The Tigers lost for the third time in 14 games against Minnesota, costing them precious ground in a crowded race for the second AL wild card. Kennys Vargas homered for the Twins, and Robbie Grossman drove in two runs. Kyle Gibson (6-9) dominated, allowing one run and five hits in eight innings. The win ended a four-start winless streak, including when Gibson allowed five runs in five innings to Detroit on Aug. 23. Matt Boyd (5-4) took the loss in his worst outing since June. He gave up seven runs, eight hits and a walk in 3 2/3 innings.
White Sox 8, Cubs 1 – White Sox use seven-run 6th to rout Indians again, 8-1
Todd Frazier and Carlos Sanchez each drove in two runs in a seven-run sixth inning, and the Chicago White Sox handed the division-leading Cleveland Indians their second straight lopsided loss, 8-1 on Tuesday night. The White Sox had seven hits, drew two walks and sent 12 batters to the plate against three pitchers in their highest-scoring inning of the season. The Indians maintained a six-game lead over Detroit in the AL Central after the Tigers lost to Minnesota 8-1. Jose Quintana (12-10) held Cleveland to five hits over eight innings, including Brandon Guyer’s solo homer in the second in Chicago’s fifth win in seven games. Tied at 1, Trevor Bauer (11-7) walked Adam Eaton to lead off the sixth. Four hits followed, with Jose Abreu driving in the first run and Frazier getting his career-high 92nd RBI to chase Bauer. Avisail Garcia then delivered an RBI single, Sanchez tripled and Eaton doubled in a run in his second time up to end Dan Otero’s night.
Cardinals 4, Cubs 2 – Moss, Diaz hit home runs, Cardinals stall Cubs with 4-2 win
Brandon Moss broke out of a lengthy slump with a tiebreaking home run and Aledmys Diaz connected in his return to the starting lineup, leading the St. Louis Cardinals over the Chicago Cubs 4-2 Tuesday night. The Cardinals ensured that the runaway Cubs won’t clinch the NL Central at Busch Stadium. Chicago’s magic number is three, and the series in St. Louis wraps up Thursday. St. Louis remained a half-game behind the New York Mets for the second wild-card spot. Moss entered the game mired in a 1-for-41 skid. He hit a two-run homer in the sixth off Jason Hammel (14-9). Dexter Fowler led off the game with a home run against Jaime Garcia. Alex Reyes (2-1) won with 4 1-3 innings of scoreless relief. Kevin Siegrist got his second save.

Cappie Pondexter made a go-ahead layup with 21 seconds left in overtime as the Chicago Sky beat the Minnesota Lynx 98-97 last night. Pondexter scored 24 points in the win
NCAA Football – Showdown Saturday in the Big Ten with big games all over
The Big Ten heavyweights spent the first three weeks of the season beating up on lesser opponents while climbing the rankings. With five teams in the top 15 of The Associated Press Top 25 , more than any other conference, it’s time for the Big Ten to get to work. The schedule on Saturday is full of big-time matchups. Third-ranked Ohio State visits No. 14 Oklahoma, No. 4 Michigan hosts improving Colorado, No. 12 Michigan State travels to No. 18 Notre Dame and Nebraska hosts No. 22 Oregon. In the new playoff era, meaty matchups like these in the nonconference may become more common. One of the main components in the selection process for the four-team playoff is strength of schedule, so power programs can no longer afford to pad the first month of their schedules with no-name schools that get paid to take a beating.
NCAA Football – Kelly believes No. 18 Notre Dame ready for No. 12 Spartans
Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly likes that his young team already has faced a big challenge playing at Texas in the opener two weeks ago as it prepares to host No. 12 Michigan State on Saturday. He says playing in front of 102,000 people is something most of his younger players hadn’t experienced before the game against the Longhorns. The 18th-ranked Irish (1-1) lost to the Longhorns 50-47 in double overtime while Michigan State (1-0) hasn’t played since beating FCS Furman 28-13 on September 2. Fans of both teams are eager to see how good each is. The traditional rivals haven’t played since a 17-13 victory Irish in 2013 _ the lone loss cost the Spartans a spot in the Bowl Championship Series title game.
NCAA – ESPN: Notre Dame police have `core powers of the state’
An attorney for ESPN says the powers of the University of Notre Dame’s campus police mirror those wielded by other Indiana police departments and that its officers are therefore subject to the same laws of disclosure. ESPN wants the department to release information about the arrest of athletes on campus. Attorney Maggie Smith told the state Supreme Court Tuesday that the ability of university police to arrest and apprehend are “the core powers of the state.”
