The next phase of renovations to the South Haven lighthouse is now underway. Ed Appleyard is on the board of the South Haven Historical Association and says scaffolding is going up now and by the end of the week, the lighthouse will be wrapped in plastic to allow for work on the exterior of the structure.

“They’re preparing to put up a scaffolding tower around the exterior, and the project is to strip the old layers of paint off, down to bare metal, prime it with new primer, do repairs where they need to, then fresh paint,” Appleyard said.

The project is expected to take between five and eight weeks. The south pier is closed to the public to allow crews to get the work done. The interior restoration on the 114-year-old lighthouse was completed this summer.
