Police all around Michigan are keeping an extra close eye on the roads this Labor Day weekend to make sure no one’s driving drunk. Melody Kindraka, with the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning, tells WSJM News there are extra cops on the road just about everywhere.

“Stepped up drunk driving patrols will be conducted in all 83 counties across the state,” Kindraka said. “We have more than 170 police departments, sheriff’s offices, and the Michigan State Police participating.”

Kindraka says 15 people died in 12 traffic crashes during the 2015 Labor Day holiday period last year, which was a jump from the year before. Nearly two-thirds of those crashes involved alcohol. She also tells us police will be doing extra seat belt enforcement this weekend. So, buckle up.
