DETROIT 8, MINNESOTA 3 – Maybin, Sanchez spark Tigers in 8-3 win over Twins
Cameron Maybin drove in three runs, including a go-ahead two-run single in the sixth
inning, to spark the Detroit Tigers over the Minnesota Twins 8-3 on Tuesday night. Anibal Sanchez (7-12) pitched seven innings to win a start on the road for the first time since the first week of the season, and the Tigers broke the game open in the seventh with soaring home runs by Erick Aybar and Victor Martinez. Brian Dozier gave Minnesota the lead in the fifth with his 29th homer, a new career high, but Kyle Gibson (5-8) couldn’t hold it. He threw two of the team’s three wild pitches in the decisive sixth, when rain started to fall hard and the Tigers tallied three runs on three singles and a walk.
WHITE SOX 8, PHIADELPHIA 1 – Abreu homers again, Rodon sharp as White Sox crush Phillies
Jose Abreu homered for a third straight game, Carlos Rodon threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings and the Chicago White Sox beat the slumping Philadelphia Phillies 9-1 on Tuesday night. Abreu hit a two-run home run and Justin Morneau followed with a solo shot in the fifth off Jake Thompson (1-3), who gave up seven runs and eight hits in
five innings. Rodon (4-8) allowed three hits and has a 1.46 ERA in his past four starts after missing most of July with a sprained left wrist suffered when he slipped on the dugout steps. Adam Eaton tripled, singled and scored twice and Tim Anderson tripled, reached base three times and drove in a run as Chicago built a 9-0 lead in its third
straight win. Freddy Galvis homered off Chris Beck in the seventh to end a 17-inning scoreless streak for the Phillies, who have dropped five.
CUBS 5, SAN DIEGO 3 – ARRIETA NL’S FIRST 16 GAME WINNER
Jake Arrieta threw eight scoreless innings of two-hit ball to become the NL’s first 16-game winner and Kris Bryant and Addison Russell homered, leading the Chicago Cubs over the San Diego Padres 5-3 on Tuesday night. Arrieta (16-5) allowed a single to Alex Dickerson in the second and Christian Bethancourt’s double in the eighth. Arrieta has two no-hitters in the past year. The Padres brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the ninth, but Aroldis Chapman got the last two outs for his 28th save after Felix Pena was charged with three runs. Bryant’s 33rd home run tied him with Colorado’s Nolan Arenado for the NL lead. Russell smacked his fifth homer in five games, a two-run shot that put the Cubs ahead 4-0 in the fifth. Arrieta won for the fourth straight start. He had six strikeouts and three walks. Christian Friedrich (4-10) lost his eighth consecutive decision.

NFL – Lions have mix of young and old behind QB Matthew Stafford
Matthew Stafford will take every snap for the Detroit Lions if the season goes as
planned. If he can’t, a seldom-used veteran and sixth-round pick are preparing to play.
Dan Orlovsky, who has played in just 27 games since making his NFL debut in 2005, will likely be the team’s No. 2 quarterback. Jake Rudock, who started at Michigan and Iowa the previous two years, seems to be putting himself in a position to earn a roster spot as Detroit’s third-string signal caller.
Rudock, though, won’t even say he’s done enough yet to make the team, saying that’s too “long term” for him. And that’s one of the reasons the Lions made a low-risk selection, taking Rudock 191st overall in the draft after he started a total of 38 games for the Wolverines last year and Hawkeyes the previous two seasons.
Stafford has liked what he has seen so far from Rudock, who is learning an up-tempo offense with a lot of adjustments that have to be made quickly.
NFL – Cromartie savors opportunity to jump start career with Colts
Less than 24 hours after the Indianapolis Colts signed the veteran cornerback, Antonio Cromartie has arrived this week at the Colts’ training complex, getting to work as if he never missed a day. Indianapolis needed Cromartie to fill the void left by a rash of injuries and believe he can fit right in and be a prominent contributor. Two years ago
he made the Pro Bowl but had a down season last year, with the New York Jets cutting him in April.
The former Florida State player has spent the last four months getting healthy, working out and waiting for a call from another NFL team. When the call finally came last Friday, he flew to Chicago and left a meeting with the Bears without a contract. Two days later, the Colts were on the phone and Cromartie got to Indianapolis as fast as he could. In addition to signing Cromartie, the Colts also signed Justin Berger, an undrafted rookie receiver, and waived receivers Marcus Leak and Andrew Opoku. Pagano also says 2013 NFL sacks leader Mathis may not play this weekend or in either of the final two preseason games.
Tennis-U.S. Open – seeds announced
Six-time champ Serena Williams and defending champ Novak Djokovic have been seeded no. 1 for the U.S. Open that opens on Monday.
Neither has played a match since early exits at the Rio Olympics. This is the fifth time Williams is the top seed at Flushing Meadows.
NCAA Football – Irish defensive back charged with felonies
Notre Dame cornerback Devin Butler has been formally charged after allegedly punching a police officer and slamming the officer to the ground over the weekend.
He’s facing felony counts of resisting law enforcement and battery against a
public safety official. Coach Brian Kelly announced Sunday that Butler had been
suspended indefinitely from the team. He remains enrolled at the university.
