Mariners 6, Tigers 5 – (15 Innings) – Seager, Zunino rally Mariners past Tigers 6-5 in 15 innings
Kyle Seager had two key hits that tied the score, Mike Zunino lofted a game-winning sacrifice fly and the Seattle Mariners rallied twice to beat the Detroit Tigers 6-5 in 15 innings Tuesday night for their season-high fifth straight victory. Victor Martinez gave Detroit a 5-4 lead when he opened the 15th with his 20th home run. But the Mariners came back against closer Francisco Rodriguez and took advantage of a pivotal error by Tigers left fielder Justin Upton. Rodriguez (1-3) issued a one-out walk to Nelson Cruz before Adam Lind singled. Seager, who tied it 4-all with a three-run homer in the eighth, followed with an RBI single to left. Upton booted the ball, allowing Lind to reach third base as Seager advanced to second. Zunino hit a fly ball to medium center field, and Lind slid home easily ahead of a wayward throw from Tyler Collins.

White Sox 7, Royals 5 – (10 Innings) – Frazier homers in 10th, White Sox beat Royals 7-5
Todd Frazier hit a three-run homer in the 10th inning and Justin Morneau had four hits to lift the Chicago White Sox over the Kansas City Royals 7-5 on Tuesday night. Frazier is tied for the major league lead with 31 homers, and his latest came on the first pitch from Kelvin Herrera (1-4) after a single by Jose Abreu and a double by Morneau. David Robertson (3-2) blew a save in the ninth when Alcides Escobar’s two-out single scored pinch-runner Jarrod Dyson. Dan Jennings struck out Eric Hosmer to end the game, logging his first career save. White Sox All-Star left-hander Chris Sale is 0-3 in five starts since a July 2 victory over Houston.

Cubs 5, Angels 1 – Bryant, Lackey lead Cubs over Angels 5-1 for 8th straight
Kris Bryant hit his 28th home run, John Lackey outpitched friend and former teammate Jered Weaver, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Los Angeles Angels 5-1 Tuesday night for their eighth straight victory. Willson Contreras also homered and Ben Zobrist added an RBI double for the major league-leading Cubs, who won their 70th game and moved a season-high 29 over .500. Kole Calhoun homered on Lackey’s third pitch, but the former Angels right-hander later retired 12 straight. Lackey (9-7) allowed three hits over eight innings, and all six of his strikeouts were looking. Weaver (8-9) gave up four earned runs and another one that was unearned when he dropped a throw to first base for an error during the Angels’ fifth straight loss. Bryant homered over the left-field bleachers in the fifth.

MLB – Cubs infielder La Stella refuses to report to minors
The Cubs have put Tommy La Stella on the temporarily inactive list, saying the infielder has refused to report to Triple-A Iowa after he was optioned to the minors nearly two weeks ago. GM Jed Hoyer says the Cubs are giving La Stella time to work “through some stuff.”

MLB – Maybin to DL
The Tigers are expected to put centerfielder Cameron Maybin on the DL after he injured his left thumb last week diving for a ball against the White Sox. Manager Brad Ausmus says Maybin suffered a grade-two sprain. He has missed five games so far.

MLB – White Sox put Garcia on disabled list with knee injury
The Chicago White Sox put outfielder-designated hitter Avisail Garcia on the disabled list with a right knee sprain before Tuesday’s game against the Kansas City Royals. Garcia is hitting .240 with 11 doubles, nine home runs and 36 RBIs in 86 games.

MLB – Fielder done playing after 2nd neck surgery
A person with direct knowledge of the medical decision says Texas Rangers slugger Prince Fielder will have to quit playing baseball after his second neck surgery. That person told The Associated Press that Fielder isn’t formally retiring, but that doctors won’t give him medical clearance to play. That person spoke on condition of anonymity Tuesday because there was no official announcement from the Rangers or Fielder about his future. Fielder had a cervical fusion on July 29 to repair a herniation between two discs in his neck. That was done just above the area where the 32-year-old Fielder had a similar surgery in May 2014, just 26 months earlier.

Olympics – Swimming
Katie Ledecky won the 200-meter freestyle for her second gold medal of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. And Michael Phelps won the 200-meter butterfly for his 20th Olympic gold medal. The United States won the four-by-200-meter freestyle relay, giving Michael Phelps his 21st Olympic gold medal. In an individual
triumph, Phelps avenged his defeat at the 2012 London Games by winning the 200-meter butterfly by holding off Japan’s Masato Sakai by a mere four-hundredths of a second.

Olympics – Gymnastics
The US women’s gymnastics team has defended its title with a gold medal win at the Rio Olympics.  Led by three-time world champ Simone Biles, the Americans blew past the competition. They finished more than eight points in front of runner-up Russia. Biles was joined by Aly Raisman, Laurie Hernandez, Gabby Douglas and Madison Kocian. China won the bronze, 68-hundredths of a second back of Russia.

Olympics – Soccer
With time running out in women’s soccer, Catalina Usme beat Hope Solo with a free kick from a tight angle to give Colombia a 2-2 draw against the United States at the Olympics. Teenager Mallory Pugh became the youngest player to score for the United States in an Olympics with her goal in the 59th minute.  Despite the tie, the top-ranked United States still finished atop Group F.

Olympics – Volleyball
The U.S. men’s volleyball team has dropped to 0-2 after a 3-1 loss to Italy.  The Americans next play host Brazil Thursday night.

Olympics – Tennis
In the Olympic tennis tournament, Serena Williams is out. Committing five double faults in one game, Williams lost to Elina Svitolina of Ukraine 6-4, 6-3 in the third round in a real shocker Tuesday, ending the No. 1-seeded American’s bid to become the first tennis player to collect a pair of singles golds.   In other tennis, defending Olympic champ Andy Murray advanced to the third
round with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Argentina’s Juan Monaco. Also winning were 2008 gold medalist Rafael Nadal and No. 12 Steve Johnson of the U.S. For the women, seventh-seed Madison Keys of the U.S. moved on to the fourth round.

Olympics – Diving – Water turns green
Green, not gold, was the color of the day at the Olympic diving venue.   Sure, China won its third consecutive gold medal on Tuesday, but the buzz was about the color of the water in the diving pool.  It was a murky green, in stark contrast to the pool’s previous day’s color and also that of the clear blue water in the second pool at the venue. British diver Tom Daley tweeted a photo of the two pools next to each other and captioned it, “Ermmm…what happened?!”  Water quality has been a major issue surrounding the Rio Olympics, but in the ocean and lagoons, not the venue pools.  A statement from Rio 2016 organizers says water tests were conducted and there is no risk to athletes. Organizers say they’re investigating what caused the color change.

NFL – Colts lose starting defensive end with knee injury
The Indianapolis Colts will be without starting defensive end Kendall Langford for three to four weeks after having arthroscopic surgery on his injured knee. Coach Chuck Pagano made the announcement when the team returned to Anderson University on Tuesday. Pagano said Langford hurt his knee in practice last week, was sent back to Indianapolis for an MRI and doctors found a chondral defect. Pagano did not say which knee was injured, but Pagano remains hopeful that Langford will be ready for the Sept. 11 season opener against Detroit. There was better news on rookie center Ryan Kelly. Indy’s first-round draft pick was expected to return to practice Tuesday afternoon after missing more than a week an injured left shoulder.

NFL – Lawsuit planned by fans who missed Hall of Fame game
Several fans who traveled to Canton, Ohio for the Hall of Fame game that was canceled on Sunday night because of poor field conditions are planning to sue the NFL and the hall. Attorney Michael Avenatti, who represented ticket holders for the 2011 Super Bowl who wound up without seats in Dallas, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that no fewer than 20 individuals have approached him about a class-action lawsuit. He said his firm has fielded another 10 calls about seeking further reimbursements, including travel expenses. Avenatti said his clients are from a variety of states, including Wisconsin and Indiana, who came to see the Packers play the Colts. The game was canceled after paint congealed and hardened on portions of the field at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium.

NFL – NFLPA head says fields much better, still can be improved
NFL fields have come a long way from the days of dangerous artificial surfaces, but the head of the players’ union says there’s much more room for improvement. Bengals offensive lineman Eric Winston says the league and the NFL Players Association need to identify trouble spots in advance. He notes that running back Reggie Bush tore a knee ligament after slipping on concrete alongside the playing field in St. Louis last season. The annual Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio was called off Sunday night because paint had congealed on the field, making it hard and slippery. The NFLPA and the league have formed a committee to evaluate stadium and practice field conditions.

NFL – Te-ball? Tebow will try to play professional baseball
With professional football not working out, Tim Tebow is going to give baseball a try. The 2007 Heisman Trophy winner and former NFL first-round draft pick plans to hold a workout for Major League Baseball teams this month. Tebow last played organized baseball in high school.  Agent Brodie Van Wagenen, the co-head of CAA Baseball, said in a statement that the workout is not a publicity stunt.  Tebow has been training in Scottsdale, Arizona, with former major league catcher Chad Moeller. Tebow won the Heisman and two national championships with the University of Florida and was drafted in the first round by the Denver Broncos in in 2010.

NCAA Football – New deal for TCU’s Patterson
TCU football coach Gary Patterson has a new contract to coach the team. He has signed a one-year extension that takes his contract through the 2021 season. Patterson is going into his 16th season as head coach of the Horned Frogs, and is the program’s winningest coach with 143 victories.
