MLB – Major League Baseball
Yesterday
New York Mets 3, Detroit Tigers 1
Baltimore Orioles 10, Chicago White Sox 2
Chicago Cubs 3, Oakland A’s 1

Mets 3, Tigers 1 – Walker’s 9th-inning homer lifts Mets over Tigers 3-1
Neil Walker hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the top of the ninth, and the New York Mets avoided a sweep with a 3-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday. The Mets were victimized by some bad luck when the Tigers tied it with back-to-back infield singles in the seventh, but after escaping the eighth thanks to a Detroit baserunning blunder, New York retook the lead when Walker went deep off Francisco Rodriguez (1-2). Anibal Sanchez pitched eight impressive innings for the Tigers, and Jacob deGrom was strong for the Mets in the finale of this three-game series. Addison Reed (3-2) got the win in relief, and Jeurys Familia pitched the ninth for his major league-leading 39th save in 41 chances. Michael Conforto homered for the Mets in the seventh.

Orioles 10, White Sox 2 – Machado hits 3 homers in 3 innings, Orioles crush White Sox
Manny Machado became the second player in major league history to homer in the first, second and third innings, driving in a career-high seven runs in a 10-2 rout of James Shields and the Chicago White Sox Sunday. Machado hit a two-run homer in the first and a three-run shot in the second off Shields, who allowed four homers while getting four outs. Machado hit another two-run homer in the third off Matt Albers. According to STATS, the only other player to do that was Carl Reynolds of the White Sox on July 2, 1930, at the Yankees. Chris Davis followed Machado’s second homer with his own and J.J. Hardy added a two-run shot before Shields (5-14) left to boos. The Orioles have hit a major league-best 168 homers this season. Dylan Bundy (5-3) stuck out a career-high nine in six innings in Baltimore’s fifth win in seven games.

Cubs 3, A’s 1 – Hendricks’ latest gem helps Cubs complete sweep of A’s
Kyle Hendricks pitched into the eighth inning for his fifth win since June and the Chicago Cubs beat the Oakland Athletics 3-1 Sunday to complete a three-game sweep. Kris Bryant and Jorge Soler both homered off A’s starter Sean Manaea (3-7). Bryant’s home run was his 27th this season, one more than the two-time All-Star had in 2015 when he was the NL’s rookie of the year. The Cubs’ seventh straight win improved them to a major league-best 69-41 and marked their 10th series sweep this season. That topped their mark from a year ago, and increased their lead in the NL Central to 11 1/2 games over St. Louis. Hendricks (11-7) was dominant against an A’s team that had dropped seven of eight going into the day. Chicago’s right-hander allowed three hits over 7 1/3 innings, struck out four and retired 17 straight before Marcus Semien’s one-out home run in the eighth.

NFL – National Football League Preseason Football – Hall of Fame Game, Canton, Ohio
Yesterday
Indianapolis Colts vs. Green Bay Packers       CANCELLED

Colts vs. Packers – CCD – Hall of Fame game cancelled for poor field conditions
The Hall of Fame game between Green Bay and Indianapolis has been canceled because of poor field conditions, hall President David Baker said Sunday. Representatives of the hall and both teams met several hours before the scheduled 8 p.m. kickoff to discuss the turf, and the Packers and Colts felt the field was not safe. Most noticeable were bare spots around midfield, and several players said painted areas were too hard. Packers players cleared the field as workers used a variety of equipment to smooth the artificial surface. Rubber pellets used in the turf came loose and were scattered in several spots and needed to be removed.

Olympics – Swimming – Ledecky smashes own record in winning 400 free
The U.S. picked up its first individual swimming gold medal of the Rio Olympics on Sunday. Fittingly, it was Katie Ledecky doing it in world record time. Ledecky posted an easy victory in the women’s 400 free, finishing in 3 minutes, 56.46 seconds. The 19-year-old from Maryland crushed the mark of 3:58.37 that she set nearly two years ago. She finished almost five seconds ahead of her nearest opponent. Ledecky has dominated the longer freestyle events since winning gold in the 800 free at the London Olympics as a 15-year-old.

Ledecky’s performance was followed by Michael Phelps’ 19th Olympic gold medal. Phelps was part of the American 4×100 relay team that beat France.  Ryan Held, Phelps, Caeleb Dressel and Nathan Adrian finished in 3 minutes, 9.92 seconds, more than a half-second ahead of the French team.

Also in the pool, Cody Miller of the U.S. took bronze in the men’s 100 breaststroke. Britain’s Adam Peaty won the event in world record time.

Dana Vollmer captured bronze in the women’s 100 butterfly, 17 months after having her first child.

Olympics – Gymnastics
Led by three-time world champion Simone Biles, the U.S. women’s gymnastics team breezed to the top of the leaderboard in preliminaries. Their total score of 185.238 was nearly 10 better than second-place China through four subdivisions. Biles’ all-around total of 62.366 was more than two points clear of teammate Aly Raisman.

Olympics – Basketball
The five-time defending-champion U.S. women’s basketball opened its Olympic schedule with a 121-56 blowout over Senegal. Diane Taurasi led the way with 15 points in the largest team offensive output in U.S. team history. The Americans’ 42nd straight Olympic win also set marks for the largest margin of victory and assists with 36.

Olympics – Fencing
Top-ranked American Alexander Massialas was upset in the men’s foil fencing final by Italy’s Daniele Garozzo 15-11.  Massialas settled for silver after attempting to become the first American man to win at the Olympics in the modern version of the sport.  He becomes the first individual Olympic medalist the U.S. has produced in men’s fencing since 1984.

Olympics – Shooting
Shooter Corey Cogdell-Unrein has delivered a bronze medal for the United States in women’s trap.  The 2008 bronze medalist topped Spain’s Fatima Galvez in a shoot-out.  Cogdell-Unrein lost her semifinal match in a shootout.

Olympics – Volleyball
The U.S. men’s volleyball team got off to a rough start by losing to Canada 25-23, 25-17, 25-23.

Olympics – Tennis
Serena Williams won her singles match and dropped her doubles match with her sister, Venus. Serena Williams opened her Olympic schedule with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Australia’s Daria Gavrilova. But the Williams sisters were 6-3, 6-4 losers to Lucie Safarova and Barbora Strycova after entering the tournament with a 15-0 record in Olympic competition.

Paralympics – Russian banned from Paralympics
The entire Russia team has been banned from competing in the upcoming Paralympic Games as punishment for the country running a doping operation. The International Paralympic Committee’s blanket ban on Russia is in sharp contrast to the earlier decision by the IOC to allow individual sports to decide whether Russians could compete in the Olympics. The Paralympics organization directly condemned the Russian state’s involvement, while stopping short of blaming Russian President Vladimir Putin.

NASCAR – Denny Hamlin wins at Watkins Glen
Denny Hamlin prevailed in a four-lap dash to the checkered flag to win a wreck-fest at newly paved Watkins Glen International on Sunday. It’s the first road course win of Hamlin’s career as he survived a race that had eight cautions for 24 laps and two red flags for 30 minutes. On the final lap, Hamlin, who was beaten on the road course at Sonoma in June by Tony Stewart in a bang on the last turn, held a slim lead over Martin Truex Jr. and Brad Keselowski as the three ran nose-to-tail entering the final turns of the 90-lap race. Keselowski spun Truex in the turn and Hamlin coasted to the victory. Joey Logano finished second, followed by Keselowski, AJ Allmendinger and Stewart. Stewart, who is retiring after the season, will finish his stellar career with eight road wins, one fewer than the record nine of Jeff Gordon.

Golf – PGA – Kelly wins, Furyk fires record-setting 58
Jim Furyk (FYOOR’-ihk) broke the record for lowest round in golf history on Sunday, but it wasn’t enough to win the PGA’s Travelers Championship near Hartford. The 46-year old former U.S. Open champ turned in a PGA Tour record 58 that included a course-record 27 on the front nine. Furyk co-held the previous mark of 59 before recording a round that included seven straight birdies. Amazingly, his score could have been lower if didn’t miss birdie tries of eight and 12 feet on the back nine. However, Furyk’s 11-under total was three shots behind winner Russell Knox, who closed with a 2-under 68 for a 14 under total that left him one stroke ahead of Jerry Kelly. Knox saved par with a 12-foot putt on the final hole.

Golf – Champions – Durant wins in playoff
Joe Durant’s eagle on the first playoff hole gave him a win over Angel Miguel Jimenez in the Champions Tour 3M Championship.   Jimenez birdied the final four holes of regulation to shoot a 5-under 67 to tie Durant at 19-under par.  Durant closed with a 63.

Ironman – Nebraska cyclist killed during Ironman race
A 34-year-old Nebraska woman has died after she was hit on a bicycle while taking part in the Ironman Boulder race. The Colorado State Patrol says Michelle Walters of McCook, Nebraska, was hit by a vehicle while riding on a major highway north of Boulder on Sunday. Ironman event coordinators issued a statement confirming the woman’s death. “We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of one of our athletes at IRONMAN Boulder,” organizers said. The driver and details of the accident have not been released. Alcohol and speed are not believed to be factors in the crash. Participants began with a 2.4-mile, one-loop swim in Boulder Reservoir. Athletes then continued on a challenging 112-mile, multiloop bike course, followed by a 26.2-mile running course.
