The United Way of Southwest Michigan will be the recipient of funds raised by Whirlpool employees this month with their “Rock the Boat” Cardboard Boat Races event at the Inn at Harbor Shores. Whirlpool’s Casey Tubman says those who participate will have a chance to use an empty appliance box to build a boat which they can then race in the river.

“That’s what we’re really looking for is people to build a boat made out of cardboard,” Tubman told WSJM. “Two people can jump into it with life jackets and oars, and race it against the other boats.”

Prizes will be awarded to the teams that build the most creative boat, the boat with the best theme, and the fastest boat. Tubman says Rock the Boat has extended its registration deadline to August 12, so anyone interested still has a chance to sign up for the August 27 event. You can find out about signing up to participate, or to donate to help sponsor a boat, at UWSM.org/rocktheboat .
