Benton Harbor City Commissioners have approved a renovation project for city hall. At Monday’s meeting, they voted to proceed with most of the work planned, tabling only one of the contracts dealing with masonry and roof work, partly due to concerns enough wasn’t done to hire local minorities. Mayor Marcus Muhammad says he’s glad to see city hall’s facade getting a variety of improvements.

“City Hall was built many decades ago, and this project is long overdue,” Muhammad told WSJM. “We want for investors and business people and, most importantly, residents when they come to their municipal building for them to be safe.”

Muhammad says visitors should also see a newly-beautified building. Just under $160,000 will be spent on brick work, fixed front doors, repairs to the handicapped ramp, roof work, and a drop-off box for after-hours payments. City Manager Darwin Watson says the work could start in the next couple of weeks.
