Cubs 3, White Sox 1 – Sale loses in White Sox return, Chapman saves Cubs’ 3-1 win
Chris Sale returned from his jersey-trashing suspension and threw six effective innings, but John Lackey outpitched him and Aroldis Chapman got the final four outs to save the Cubs’ 3-1 victory over the White Sox in Chicago’s rivalry series Thursday night. Sale (14-4) was greeted with smiles and hugs from his teammates following a five-day ban for tearing up 1976-style uniforms he didn’t want to wear before his previous scheduled start. He had command issues, but worked out of trouble while allowing two runs and six hits. Lackey (8-7) allowed one run in six innings for his first win since June 8. Chapman, in his second appearance since being acquired from the Yankees, struck out two and consistently hit 102 mph in his first save for his new team. Kris Bryant, who homered against Sale in the All-Star Game, hit an RBI double off the center field wall in the first.

MLB – Sale loses in return from ban, wants to stay in Chicago
Chris Sale arrived on the last player bus to Wrigley Field dressed in a dark suit, walked into the cramped visiting clubhouse, scanned the room and smiled. He hugged teammates Dioner Navarro and Matt Albers, then did a lap around the clubhouse, greeting each player sitting at his locker. Chicago White Sox players warmly greeted their ace as he returned to the team Thursday following his jersey-tearing incident last weekend that earned him a five-day suspension. Sale went on to throw six effective innings, but it wasn’t enough as the Cubs won 3-1 to earn a split in Chicago’s rivalry series. The White Sox optioned right-hander Anthony Ranaudo to Triple-A Charlotte to open a roster spot as Sale was reinstated from the suspended list. The left-hander tore up 1976-era throwback jerseys he didn’t want to wear for his previous scheduled start Saturday against Detroit. The White Sox scratched Sale, sent him home and a day later suspended him five days for “insubordination and for destroying team equipment.” Sale later told MLB.com that he stood by his actions and suggested Ventura should have stood up for him. He said the uncomfortable uniforms showed the White Sox valued promotion over winning.

MLB – Cubs considering new translator for star closer Chapman
The Chicago Cubs are considering bringing in a new Spanish translator for Aroldis Chapman after the star closer from Cuba struggled to answer questions about a past domestic violence case in his introductory news conference. Manager Joe Maddon suggested the change Thursday night, saying they had a couple of names in mind. Team spokesman Peter Chase said coach Henry Blanco remains the official translator for now. Chapman earned his first save with his new team Thursday night, striking out two and getting the final four outs in the Cubs’ 3-1 victory over the crosstown White Sox. Catcher Miguel Montero served as Chapman’s translator after the game for the second straight day.

Golf – PGA – Walker leads the way at the PGA
There have been three first-time winners in golf’s major tournaments this year. Jimmy Walker is aiming to make it 4-for-4. Walker carded his best round in a major championship Thursday, firing a 5-under 65 in the opening round of the PGA Championship at Baltusrol Golf Club in Northern New Jersey. He had six birdies and a bogey following an early tee time. Martin Kaymer shares second with Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo and England’s Ross Fisher. Kaymer won the tournament six years ago. Reigning British Open champ Henrik Stenson finds himself in a four-way tie for fifth with Andy Sullivan and Americans Harris English and James Hahn. Defending champion Jason Day and Rickie Fowler each shot a 68, and Jordan Spieth came in with a 70. Phil Mickelson, the 2005 winner on the same Baltusrol course, opened with a 1-over-71. Rory McIlroy shot a 74.

NFL – Lions sign WR Anquan Boldin just before kicking off camp
The Detroit Lions made a series of moves in the aftermath of Calvin Johnson’s retirement, signing one of the best receivers available at the start of free agency and another one a day before their first practice. Detroit added depth to a position led by Golden Tate and depleted by Johnson’s departure by signing Anquan Boldin on Thursday just before opening training camp. The Lions signed Marvin Jones to a five-year contract days after Johnson left the league and Lions in March.  In between those two transactions, they added veterans Jeremy Kerley and Andre Caldwell. They also plan on giving young returning players such as TJ Jones and Corey Fuller a chance to catch more passes in an offense that will no longer be designed to throw the ball to Johnson early and often. “Your team is going to change somewhat in April about 30 percent,” Detroit coach Jim Caldwell said. “Some of it’s going to be easy transitions and some of it’s going to be difficult. But our job is to overcome any tough situations that we may face.”  The Lions won’t face defenses for the first time in a decade set up to slow down the 6-foot-5 Johnson, whose size, speed and athletic ability helped him set league records.

NCAA Football – MAC commissioner calls for restrictions on satellite camps
Mid-American Conference Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher is calling for some limits on when and where football satellite camps can be held. Steinbrecher suggested a 15-day window to hold the camps and a requirement that they take place on the ground of another four-year college. Steinbrecher spoke Thursday at the MAC’s annual media day at Ford Field in Detroit. Satellite camps have become a big issue over the past year. The Southeastern Conference wanted them banned, with some coaches arguing that it was just a way for programs to recruit. The Division I Council approved a proposal requiring Football Bowl Subdivision schools to hold camps at or near home, but the Division I Board of Directors rescinded the ban in early May.

NCAA Football – New playoff schedule
Starting with the 2018 season there won’t be any more weekday semifinal college football playoff games. Citing low TV ratings the people in charge of the playoff have announced plans to move the dates of future semifinals to ensure the games will be played either on a Saturday or a holiday.  This season’s semifinals are still set for Saturday, Dec. 31, but after 2018 the games initially scheduled to be played on New Year’s Eve, will now be played Saturday, Dec. 29.

NCAA Football – NCAA recommends 1 live-contact football practice per week
The NCAA football oversight committee recommended Division I football programs hold only one “live-contact” practice per week. The current guidelines, which are not enforceable rules, allow two live practices per week. The new guidelines announced Wednesday will take effect this season.  Live practices are defined as those that involve tackling to the ground and full-speed blocking, and can occur in full or half pads. Live contact does not include thudding, when players are not taken to the ground. The Ivy League announced earlier this season that it would eliminate live tackling in practice, and even at the FBS level teams rarely have live tackling in practice. The new guidelines would allow an additional contact practices for players who do not play in a game.

NBA – Bulls sign guard Spencer Dinwiddie
The Chicago Bulls have signed guard Spencer Dinwiddie.  The Bulls acquired Dinwiddie in a trade with Detroit last month and waived him three weeks ago. He spent two years with the Pistons and appeared in 12 games last season, averaging 4.8 points and 13.3 minutes. The Bulls announced the move Thursday.
