The drivers of newer model cars are more likely to be stranded along the side of the road, but not necessarily because the cars are breaking down more often. A new report from AAA of Michigan finds the lack of a spare tire in many new vehicles means drivers who get a flat are stuck. Spokesperson Gary Bubar says it’s a safety concern.

“Anytime a vehicle is alongside of the road, it can be dangerous, not just for the drivers around them, but also for the driver of that vehicle.”

Bubar says AAA shares the results of its reports with auto manufacturers. Other factors that get drivers stuck on the side of the road include those who lock themselves out of the car due to a keyless ignition system and drivers running out of gas because they push the limits of new range estimators.
