Tigers 4, Royals 2 – Saltalamacchia’s HR in 9th gives Tigers 4-2 win over Royals
Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Detroit Tigers a 4-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday. After Tyler Collins hit a leadoff single in the ninth, Saltalamacchia won it with a drive off Joakim Soria (3-4) that easily cleared the wall in right field. The Detroit catcher raised his right arm in celebration almost immediately as he trotted toward first base. Those were the only two RBIs of the day for Detroit. The Tigers scored their first two runs of the game on a balk and a wild pitch. Francisco Rodriguez (1-0) pitched a perfect top of the ninth for the win. Detroit rookie Michael Fulmer allowed two runs and six hits in eight innings. Royals starter Yordano Ventura allowed two runs and eight hits in seven innings.

Angels 8, White Sox 1 – Pujols’ 2 HRs power Angels past White Sox 8-1 for sweep
Albert Pujols hit a pair of two-run homers, Jered Weaver pitched seven strong innings and the Los Angeles Angels completed an emphatic three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox with an 8-1 victory Sunday.  Pujols connected in the first and fourth innings of his 53rd multi-homer game. He has 577 career homers as he pursues Mark McGwire (583) for 10th place on baseball’s career list.  Five Angels drove in a run while lighting up Jacob Turner (0-1) over the first five innings. He yielded seven hits and eight runs in his debut for the White Sox, who have lost four straight. After their worst first half since 1992, the injury-plagued Halos (40-52) returned with three outstanding starts while outscoring Chicago 16-1. Weaver (8-7) limited the White Sox to six hits and one walk as Los Angeles won for the seventh time in nine games overall.

Rangers 4, Cubs 1 – Hamels dominant, Rangers end 4-game slide by topping Cubs
Cole Hamels pitched eight dominant innings in his first game at Wrigley Field since throwing a no-hitter at the famed ballpark a year ago, and the Texas Rangers stopped a four-game slide by topping the Chicago Cubs 4-1 Sunday. Hamels (10-2) struck out his first six batters. He fanned seven overall and gave up just an unearned run on four hits. Last summer, the lefty threw a no-hitter and struck out 13 at Wrigley in his final start for Philadelphia. He was then traded to the Rangers.      Sam Dyson struck out three in the ninth for his 19th save in 21 chances. Ian Desmond homered and Robinson Chirinos drove in two runs as Texas avoided a three-game sweep in the matchup of division leaders. The Cubs had won three in a row. John Lackey (7-6) allowed four runs and six hits in eight innings as his winless streak reached seven starts.

Golf – British Open – Stenson gets first major
The first-timer beat the old-timer at Royal Troon. Sweden’s Henrik Stenson claimed his first major championship by outlasting 46-year-old Phil Mickelson in the final round of the British Open. Stenson tied a major record with a 63 that included 10 birdies and two bogeys. The only other player to shoot a 63 in the final round of a major was Johnny Miller at Oakmont in 1973. Stenson closed the tournament with a 20-foot birdie putt that left him with a 20-under 264, breaking the total scoring record for a major tournament. David Toms had a 265 total at the 2001 PGA Championship, and Greg Norman was the previous Open scoring record-holder at 267 in 1993 at Royal St. George’s. The turning point in the round was when Stenson sank a 50-foot birdie putt on 15 to take a two-shot lead. It helped Stenson shed the distinction of being the best current golfer without a major title. Mickelson was trying to become the second-oldest British Open champion in history, and the oldest since Tom Morris in 1867. He closed with a 65 for a 17-under total, three strokes back in his 11th runner-up finish at a major.

Golf – PGA – Baddeley wins in a playoff
Aaron Baddeley sank a 24-foot putt on the fourth playoff hole to beat Si Woo Kim and win the PGA’s Barbasol Championship on Sunday at Grand National. Baddeley finished with a 5-under 66 to match Kim at 18-under 266. Kim shot a 63 but closed with a bogey.

Golf – LPGA – Ko wins in Ohio
Lydia Ko claimed her fourth LPGA Tour victory of the season by outlasting Ariya Jutanugarn and Mirim Lee in a four-hole playoff at the Marathon Classic in Ohio. The top-ranked Ko made a 10-foot birdie putt on the final extra hole to close out her 14th LPGA Tour title. She was 14 under through regulation.

NASCAR – Kenseth wins in New Hampshire
Matt Kenseth pulled away down the stretch to win the Sprint Cup race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Martin Truex Jr. and Kyle Busch each led more than 120 laps before fading late, paving the way for Kenseth to get his second victory of the year. The win was the 38th of Kenseth’s career. Tony Stewart finished second to strengthen his spot inside the top 30 in the points standings.

IndyCar – Street racing in Toronto
Will Power finished first in the IndyCar street race in Toronto his third win this season. A caution with four laps remaining set up one final restart on the temporary course at Exhibition Place. Power got a great start to pull away from teammate Helio Castroneves to give Penske a 1-2 sweep.

Cycling – Tour de France – Froome retains yellow jersey
Colombian rider Jarlinson Pantano won the brutal 15th stage of the Tour de France through the Jura mountains after a long breakaway. Race leader Chris Froome finished slightly more than three minutes behind in a group that included all other contenders.

NBA – LA Clippers waive F Branden Dawson
The Los Angeles Clippers have waived forward Branden Dawson, who played sparingly for them as a rookie last season. The team announced Sunday they were cutting ties with the former Michigan State standout, who became expendable after its reported acquisition of veteran power forward Brandon Bass, which the team has yet to officially announce.

The Arete, owned by Rick Warner of Marine City, was the first to cross the finish line in the Port Huron to Mackinac Island sailboat race on Sunday.
