MLB – Road looks tougher for Cubs in second half
The second half of the Major League Baseball season gets underway Friday when the All-Star break ends with a 15-game schedule. The Cubs raced out to a seven-game lead at the break by playing the second-easiest schedule in the majors. But things might get a little tougher for the NL Central leaders in next few weeks. Chicago returns from the All-Star break with three games against AL-leading Texas and then plays the Mets, Brewers, White Sox and Mariners to close out July. All but Milwaukee are over .500 and competing for playoff spots. It will be Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers hosting the world champion Kansas City Royals tonight as they open second-half play. Ian Kennedy is slated to start for Kansas City.   The White Sox open a road trip out West against the Los Angeles Angels.

A judge has agreed to move a hearing for Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green in his misdemeanor assault and battery case before he leaves next month for the Olympics. The Lansing State Journal reports that a pre-trial conference originally set for Aug. 4 will be held next Thursday. The former Michigan State basketball player is accused of striking former Spartans football player Jermaine Edmondson in the jaw during a weekend confrontation near the East Lansing campus. Green’s attorney says it would be difficult for his client to communicate while he’s out of the country. Green was arrested and taken to the East Lansing jail where he had a blood-alcohol level of 0.10, police said. According to a police report, Green said “he was sorry” and sought “to make things right.”  Michigan State says Edmondson has received his release to transfer.
