MLB – Giancarlo Stanton beats Frazier in All-Star Home Run Derby
Giancarlo Stanton of the Miami Marlins has won the All-Star Home Run Derby with an impressive display of power that bested defending champion Todd Frazier of the Chicago White Sox. Stanton hit a record 61 homers in three rounds Monday night at Petco Park, including a shot estimated at 497 feet. The three-time All-Star is not on the NL roster for Tuesday night’s game after batting .233 with 20 homers and 50 RBIs before the break. Stanton hit 20 home runs in the final round, including two off the third level of the Western Metal Supply Co. Building brick warehouse in the left-field corner. Two more landed just under the scoreboard in left. Frazier hit 13 in the final round. Stanton can defend his title at home next year when the Marlins host the All-Star Game.  The Western Metal Supply Co. Building served as one of the better Derby targets, joining the Warehouse at Baltimore’s Camden Yards in 1993 and McCovey Cove outside San Francisco’s AT&T Park in 2007.

MLB – No MLB game in London
Major League Baseball has scrubbed plans to play regular-season games in London next year. Players association president Tony Clark said a number of factors have made it impossible to finalize plans for big league games there in time for the 2017 season. Clark also was non-committal about having players on 25-man active rosters made available for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, to be held during the major league season.

NBA – Duncan calls it a career
The San Antonio Spurs will be spending a season without Tim Duncan for the first time since 1997. The 19-year veteran has retired after winning five titles and three MVP awards in an NBA career spent entirely with the Spurs. He is fifth on the NBA’s career list in blocks, sixth in rebounds and 14th in scoring.

NBA – Warriors star Draymond Green faces misdemeanor assault claim
Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green was arrested on a charge of misdemeanor assault and battery over the weekend near the Michigan State campus. The alleged incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. Sunday in the city where Green played for the Spartans from 2008 to 2012. East Lansing Police Lt Scott Wrigglesworth says the male victim was not injured and the man did not flag down an officer. If convicted of assault or assault and battery, Green could face 93 days in jail, a $500 fine or both. Messages seeking comment were left for Green, an NBA All-Star who was selected to play basketball for the U.S. at the Olympics next month. The Warriors said they were collecting information about the incident.

NBA – Tech leaders urge Silver to consider moving NBA All-Star
Technology industry leaders have urged NBA Commissioner Adam Silver to move the All-Star Game out of Charlotte unless a North Carolina law that limits anti-discrimination protections for lesbian, gay and transgender people is repealed “in very short order.” In a letter sent Friday and obtained by The Associated Press, the executives tell Silver that putting fans at risk of discrimination would “send a terrible message about who the NBA is and what it values as an organization, and set a dangerous precedent.” The All-Star weekend is set for next February. Silver has resisted setting any deadlines for when the league might act, believing positive dialogue is ongoing that he hopes would lead to changes in the HB2 law. However, he has said a decision probably would have to be made this summer.  NBA owners are holding their annual offseason meeting this week in Las Vegas.

Olympics – NBC to air opening ceremony of Rio Olympics on 1-hour delay
NBC will broadcast the opening ceremony of the Rio Olympics on a one-hour delay.  NBC Sports Group Chair Mark Lazarus said Monday that will allow producers to “curate” the coverage to provide proper context. With Rio just one hour ahead of the United States’ Eastern time zone, the network will televise most competition live, with the notable exception of gymnastics. For the third straight Olympics, NBC will stream every event live, but that hasn’t included the opening ceremony. This year, viewers will need to wait only an hour. The opening ceremony is Aug. 5. NBC also announced Monday that it would air a one-hour preview special the night before. While the program will feature several star athletes, it will also offer the network a chance to cover topics such as the Zika virus and polluted waters that it likely won’t address much once the games begin.

Olympics – Golf – Spieth says no to Olympics
Jordan Spieth is taking a pass on golf’s return to the Olympics for the first time in 112 years. Spieth joins a growing list of big name players who are skipping the Summer Games in Rio next month due to health concerns.  Spieth joins top-ranked Jason Day, Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy as those who have opted out of the Olympics because of the Zika virus. They are the top four ranked players in the world.

Golf – British Open week is underway
Zach Johnson has surrendered the hardware. The defending British Open champ has returned the claret jug that has accompanied him since he won a three-way playoff at St. Andrew’s last year.  The trophy is being stored until a new champ is crowned Sunday at Royal Troon. Colin Montgomerie gets the honor of hitting the opening tee shot when the third major tournament of the year starts on Thursday. The 53-year old Scot will be playing what’s likely his final British Open at the club where his father was the longtime secretary. Top-ranked Jason Day will play in a group with Rickie Fowler and Masters champion Danny Willett. U.S. Open champion Dustin Johnson plays with Martin Kaymer (KY’-mur) and Russell Knox.

Cycling – Tour de France – Froome holds lead on day off
