Blue Jays 6, Tigers 1 – Donaldson hits 3-run HR, Blue Jays beat Tigers 6-1
All-Star slugger Josh Donaldson hit a three-run homer, R.A. Dickey won back-to-back starts for the first time in a month and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Detroit Tigers 6-1 Sunday in the teams’ final game before the All-Star break. Donaldson is the sixth player in American League history to hit at least 20 home runs and score 80 runs or more before the All-Star break. The others were Lou Gehrig (1936), Ted Williams (1946), Reggie Jackson (1969), Frank Thomas (1994), and Alex Rodriguez (2000). Donaldson is the first player to score 80 or more runs before the break since 2008, when Ian Kinsler (84) and Hanley Ramirez (80) both did it. Dickey (7-9) allowed one run and five hits in seven innings to win consecutive starts for the first time since victories at Boston on June 3rd and at Detroit on June 8th.

Braves 2, White Sox 0 – Foltynewicz fans 10 for Braves in 2-0 win over White Sox
Mike Foltynewicz allowed five hits in seven innings, Jeff Francoeur and Jace Peterson homered and the Atlanta Braves beat the Chicago White Sox 2-0 on Sunday. Foltynewicz (3-3), who grew up in the far southwest suburbs of Chicago, had a career-high 10 strikeouts without allowing a walk. He struck out the side in the seventh on 12 pitches. The 24-year-old right-hander won for the first time since beating the Giants on May 30. He was placed on the disabled list on June 4 with a bone spur and made his third start since returning. Chris Withrow pitched a scoreless eighth for the Braves and Jim Johnson finished for his second save in four chances. White Sox starter James Shields (4-10) allowed six hits, including both homers, in 7 2/3 innings.

Cubs 6, Pirates 5 – Bryant leads Cubs to 6-5 win against Pirates
Kris Bryant’s RBI single in the eighth inning lifted the Chicago Cubs to a 6-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday.  Pinch-hitter Matt Szczur doubled to left field with one out against Pirates reliever Tony Watson (1-3). Bryant, who had three hits and reached base four times, followed with his tiebreaking hit to put the Cubs back ahead. Chicago avoided a series sweep ended its five game losing streak. Pittsburgh lost for just the second time in 11 games heading to the All-Star break. Cubs reliever Pedro Strop (2-2) gave up Andrew McCutchen’s tying sacrifice fly in the seventh, Carl Edwards pitched a hitless eight and Hector Rondon got the last three outs for his 14th save.

Murray made only 12 unforced errors, two in the second set. He also took 50 of 65 service points over the opening two sets and never faced a break point until the final set. Britain had gone 77 years without a Wimbledon men’s champion before Murray’s 2013 title.     Raonic is the first Canadian man to appear in a Grand Slam final.

Olympics – US Gymnastics – Biles, Douglas headline US women’s gymnastics team
Simone Biles can officially book that plane ticket for Brazil. Same for defending Olympic champion Gabby Douglas. Biles, the three-time world gymnastics champion, secured her spot on the U.S. Olympic team with a near flawless tour of the SAP Center in San Jose, California, last night. She earned an automatic berth on the five-woman team by strolling to the all-around title at the Olympic Trials.  Biles will be joined in Rio de Janeiro by Douglas, three-time Olympic medalist Aly Raisman, Madison Kocian and Laurie Hernandez. MyKayla Skinner, Ragan Smith and Ashton Locklear are the alternates. While Biles has been a lock for months, the path to the Olympics was far murkier for Douglas. The 20-year-old has struggled with her form in recent weeks and fell off balance beam for a second straight night while finishing seventh behind Biles. But Douglas finished third on uneven bars behind Kocian and Locklear.

Golf – Champions – Goydos wins by two shots
Paul Goydos shot a 3-under 67 in the final round to win the Champions Tour’s Dick’s Sporting Goods Open. He finished at 14 under for a two-shot triumph over Wes Short, Jr.

Golf – LPGA – Lang takes major after Nordqvist is assessed penalty
There was a rather bizarre ending to the U.S. Women’s Open, which was won by Brittany Lang over Anna Norqvist in a three-hole playoff. Nordqvist touched the sand with her club in a bunker for a two-stroke penalty on the second extra hole, but the players weren’t told of the decision until they were on the next hole. Lang sealed the win with a short par putt on the final playoff hole, while Nordqvist made bogey to lose by three shots. The USGA’s delayed decision comes a month after Dustin Johnson played much of the final round of the U.S. Open not knowing if he would be penalized one stroke because his ball moved as he addressed it on the fifth green. Johnson wound up winning the tournament in regulation despite the penalty. Lang closed with a 71 for a 6-under total through regulation. Nordqvist forced the playoff with a 5-under 67. Third-round leader and top-ranked Lydia Ko shot a 75 to finish in a four-way tie for third, two strokes back.

Cycling – Tour de France – Dumoulin wins stage, Froome still leads
Dutch rider Tom Dumoulin is the winner of the ninth stage of the Tour de France, finishing up in a hailstorm.  Defending champ Chris Froome held onto the overall leader’s yellow jersey. Two-time champion Alberto Contador pulled out due to a fever midway through the stage.
