Blue Jays 5, Tigers 4 – Tulowitzki has 3 RBIs, Blue Jays beat Tigers 5-4
Troy Tulowitzki drove in the tying and go-ahead runs with a bases-loaded single in the eighth inning, and the Toronto Blue Jays rallied to beat the Detroit Tigers 5-4 Thursday night for their season-best sixth straight victory.  Tulowitzki finished 2 for 4 with a walk and three RBIs. He is batting .338 (22 for 65) with 20 RBIs in 17 games since coming off the disabled list on June 18. Jason Grilli (3-2) pitched one inning for the win. Roberto Osuna worked the ninth for his 18th save.  Toronto trailed 4-2 after James McCann scored on Ian Kinsler’s double play groundout in the seventh, but the Blue Jays shaved the deficit to one when Tulowitzki hit an RBI single off Shane Greene in the bottom half.

Braves 4, Cubs 3 (11 Innings) – Markakis homers twice, Braves beat slumping Cubs in 11
Nick Markakis homered twice, including a tying solo shot in the ninth inning, and Tyler Flowers’ two-out single in the 11th early Friday morning gave the Atlanta Braves a 4-3 victory over the slumping the Chicago Cubs. Willson Contreras hit a two-run triple in a three-run eighth inning to put the Cubs up 3-2. But closer Hector Rondon blew his fourth save when he gave up the second homer to Markakis to lead off the ninth, Atlanta’s first hit since the second inning. Flowers singled to right off Spencer Patton (1-1) and Freddie Freeman, who walked, barely beat Ben Zobrist’s throw home. Dario Alvarez (3-1) worked a perfect 10th before giving up consecutive singles to Contreras and Jason Heyward to lead off the 11th.  The extra-inning game followed a rain delay of 1 hour, 35 minutes.

MLB – Cubs starter Jason Hammel leaves with cramping in hand
Chicago Cubs right-hander Jason Hammel has exited his start against the Atlanta Braves in the sixth inning with cramping in his right hand. Hammel had retired 11 straight batters before throwing two balls to Gordon Beckham to lead off the sixth. The trainer and manager Joe Maddon came out to check on Hammel, and after a few warm-up pitches he stayed in the game.  But after completing a four-pitch walk to Beckham, Maddon and the trainer returned to the mound and Hammel was replaced by Travis Wood on the humid night.

MLB – Fan injured after falling from Wrigley Field bleachers
A man was carted off Wrigley Field and hospitalized after he slipped and fell while attempting to jump from the bleachers before a game between the Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs Thursday night. The Cubs, who didn’t identify the man, said in a statement the fan “was injured after attempting to jump onto the field.” They didn’t provide his condition. The man, dressed in shorts and sneakers, was face down just in front of the ivy in right-center field when officials started running from the dugouts to assist him. They immediately checked his pulse while a medic ran in from right field.  It took three people to turn the man over onto his back. They then pulled up his shirt and put on a brace to stabilize his neck before strapping him onto a backboard and loading him into a cart. Cubs outfielder Albert Almora Jr. and pitching coach Chris Bosio also went out to the outfield to check on the man. The man was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. There was a visible dip in the yellow fencing at the top of the 11 1/2-foot wall above where the man was treated. The Wrigley Field bleachers are known for for their party-like atmosphere and sometimes rowdy behavior. The fan was hurt just after 7 p.m., about the scheduled start time, but the tarp was on the field because of earlier heavy rain. The game later began after a delay of 1 hour, 35 minutes.

NCAA Football – Notre Dame, Michigan resuming football rivalry
Notre Dame and Michigan, the two winningest programs in college football history, have agreed to resume their football rivalry.  The announcement was made Thursday afternoon. The Fighting Irish will host the Wolverines on Sept. 1 2018, and the series will shift to Michigan Stadium on October 26th, 2019.  Notre Dame opted out of its series with Michigan in 2012, canceling games in 2015-2017. The Fighting Irish said at the time the move was a precaution as it began the process of a scheduling commitment to the ACC.   Michigan leads the all-time series against the Irish 24-17-1

NBA – Bulls formally announce signing of PG Rajon Rondo
The revamped Chicago Bulls have announced the addition of point guard Rajon Rondo. The team did not disclose terms of the contract, but a person with knowledge of the negotiations previously told The Associated Press that the four-time All-Star agreed to a $30 million, two-year deal. Rondo replaces former MVP Derrick Rose, who was traded to New York before the draft. Also coming to Chicago is 12-time All-Star Dwyane Wade, who turned down a lower offer to stay in Miami and agreed to a two-year, $47 million deal Wednesday. Adding the 30-year-old Rondo and 34-year-old Wade goes against management’s stated desire to get younger after the Bulls missed the playoffs for the first time in eight years. It also remains to be seen how they will fit in coach Fred Hoiberg’s more freewheeling offense.

NBA – Pistons sign San Antonio’s Marjanovic to $21 million deal
The Detroit Pistons have signed San Antonio big man Boban Marjanovic to a $21 million, three-year offer sheet. Misko Raznatovic, Marjanovic’s agent, announced the deal Thursday. The Spurs can match the offer within three days, but their salary cap situation makes that seem unlikely.  The 7-foot-3 Marjanovic, who turns 28 in August, averaged 5.5 points per game last season for the Spurs. That was his first NBA season. Marjanovic is a three-time MVP of the Serbian Super League.  The Pistons have also reached agreements with free agents Ish Smith and Jon Leuer. They’ve called a news conference Friday to introduce those players.

NFL – Calvin Johnson says players could get painkillers like candy
Calvin Johnson says NFL players could get painkillers like they were “candy” during the first half of his career with the Detroit Lions. Johnson’s comments were part of a wide-ranging interview on ESPN’s news magazine E:60 that was scheduled to be broadcast Thursday night. The record-breaking receiver retired earlier this year, leaving the Lions at the age of 30 after nine seasons. Johnson says in the interview it would have been hard to “let go” if the Lions would have been a contender. Detroit was 7-9 last year, its seventh season with a losing record with Johnson on the team. He had 731 career receptions for 11,619 yards and 83 touchdowns. Johnson broke one of Hall of Famer Jerry Rice’s records in 2012 with 1,964 yards receiving.

Tennis – Wimbledon – No Serena vs. Venus final
It will be top-ranked and six-time champion Serena Williams against fourth seed Angelique Kerber in the Wimbledon women’s final on Saturday. Williams needed just 48 minutes to dispatch Elena Vesnina 6-2, 6-0 before Kerber whipped Venus Williams 6-4, 6-4. Kerber has dropped five of her seven matches against Serena Williams in their career, but she beat the 21-time major champion in the Australian Open final earlier this year.

Cycling – Tour de France – Cavendish is tops again
British sprinter Mark Cavendish captured of the sixth stage of the Tour de France, giving him three stage wins this year. It is Cavendish’s 29th overall stage win, putting him in second place, five back of all-time leader Eddy Merckx.  Greg van Avermaet kept the yellow jersey of the overall leader.
