Philadelphia Phillies 8, Chicago Cubs 7

MIN 4, DET 3 – Morneau homers, Twins beat Tigers 4-3
Justin Morneau hit a two-run homer in his second game back from a wrist injury, and the Minnesota Twins held on for a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Thursday. P.J. Walters (1-1) allowed four hits, including three solo homers, in 6 1-3 innings for the Twins, who swept the two-game series at Comerica Park. Minnesota (12-26) has won two in a row for only the second time this season. Morneau's homer off Doug Fister (0-2) opened the scoring in the third, and Trevor Plouffe followed with a solo shot. Minnesota led 4-0 before the Tigers came back with homers by Brennan Boesch, Andy Dirks and Prince Fielder. Three relievers finished for the Twins, with Matt Capps pitching a perfect ninth for his eighth save.

CWS 6, LAA 1 – Sale, Viciedo lead White Sox over Angels 6-1
Chris Sale pitched effectively into the sixth inning, giving Chicago's rotation a much-needed solid outing, and the White Sox capitalized on some shoddy defense by the Los Angeles Angels for a 6-1 victory yesterday. After a three-game stretch in which starters John Danks, Jake Peavy and Gavin Floyd gave up a combined 18 earned runs over 14 1-3 innings, Sale (4-2) restored order in his sixth major league start. The 23-year-old left-hander struck out seven and was working on a three-hit shutout in the sixth when he gave up a one-out homer to Albert Pujols and a double to Mark Trumbo and was replaced by Nate Jones. Trumbo had a career-high four hits. C.J. Wilson (4-4) threw 88 pitches in 3 2-3 innings and tied a career high with six walks. He was charged with four runs, one earned, and four hits.

PHI 8, CHC 7 – Halladay earns first win in a month
Roy Halladay threw eight strong innings for his first victory in a month and the Philadelphia Phillies held on for an 8-7 win over the Chicago Cubs last night. Halladay (4-3) hadn't won since April 16, a span of five starts, and had lost three straight decisions to match a career high, but held the Cubs to three runs and scattered seven hits. The two-time Cy Young winner has allowed three earned runs or fewer in eight of his nine starts this season. Chicago's Welington Castillo's stroked a two-out, three-run double in the ninth against Phillies LHP Jake Diekman to close the gap to two runs. Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon came on and allowed an RBI single to Darwin Barney, but got Reed Johnson on a grounder to third for his 11th save of the season.

NFL – Lions' Sims put on weight to go from good to great
Detroit Lions offensive guard Rob Sims has put on weight to go from good to great. Sims says he has gained 15 pounds this offseason after weighing less than 300 the past two years with mixed results against bigger defensive lineman such as Minnesota's Kevin Williams. The Lions will gather for organized team activities next week with the first of 10 scheduled for Monday. Sims says he doesn't think starting tackles Jeff Backus or Gosder Cherilus will be worried about holding off rookie Riley Reiff. The first-round pick, though, has shown Sims and teammates why Detroit drafted the former Iowa standout.

NFL – Attorney: No charges against Marshall
The lawyer for Brandon Marshall says no charges will be brought against the Chicago Bears wide receiver for an altercation outside a nightclub in March. Harvey Steinberg says Marshall won't be charged after a woman filed a complaint that he punched her in the face outside Manhattan's Marquee club. Steinberg says: ``We maintained all along he is a victim and there is no basis to believe these charges.'' A spokesman for the New York City Police Department says they are still investigating the complaint. Detective Brian Sessa of the NYPD said yesterday the case is still open. Marshall was traded by Miami to Chicago in March.

NCAA Football – ND WR Daniels cited for underage drinking
Notre Dame wide receiver DaVaris Daniels has been cited for consumption of alcohol by a minor in his Illinois hometown. The South Bend Tribune reports the 19-year-old was one of 29 minors cited early Sunday at a house in Vernon Hills, Ill. The 6-2, 190-pound Daniels did not play as a freshman last season, but is expected to challenge for a starting spot next season. According to court documents, Daniels was not arrested. He is scheduled to appear in court on June 14. Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly said in a news release that he is aware of Daniels situation and that he would speak to him about it. Kelly said any team-related discipline would be handled internally.

NCAA Football – Not guilty plea entered for Notre Dame QB Rees
Notre Dame quarterback Tommy Rees made an initial appearance before a magistrate and a not guilty plea to four misdemeanor charges was entered on his behalf. Rees is charged with one count of battery, two counts of resisting law enforcement and one count of illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor. South Bend police say he fled from an off-campus party early May 3 and pepper spray was needed to subdue him. Rees didn't speak during Thursday's court hearing, which lasted less than a minute. Neither Rees nor defense attorney George Horn would comment afterward. Rees is due back in court July 17. Linebacker Carlo Calabrese didn't make an appearance on a misdemeanor count of intimidation. He is scheduled to be in court June 21.

PGA – Byron Nelson
Ryan Palmer is the man on top after the first round of the PGA's Byron Nelson Championship. He opened with a 6-under-64, good for a one shot lead over Marc Leishman and Alex Cejka. In last year's tournament, Palmer lost a playoff to Keegan Bradley.
