March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Vicki Rakowski, C-O-O of the American Cancer Society Great Lakes Division, tells us that the disease is common, and people need to know it's time to start being screened when they reach the age of around 50:
Rakowski notes that such a screening isn't really something that can get done at your regular check-up:
She says it's worth the effort because you can do a lot of to fight the cancer through simple steps:
The odds of survival are relatively high if colorectal cancer is caught early. However, Rakowski says that if you wait for symptoms to appear, it may be too late. To find out more about prevention, go to www.cancer.org .
