CHI 2, DET 1 – Crawford helps Blackhawks top Red Wings 2-1
Corey Crawford made 31 saves to lead the Chicago Blackhawks to a 2-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings last night in a matchup of Central Division rivals missing their top centers. Jimmy Hayes scored the tying goal in the second period and set up Marcus Kruger's winning score in the third as Chicago earned its fourth consecutive victory since a nine-game losing streak. Valtteri Filppula scored a power-play goal for NHL-leading Detroit, which had won six in a row. Jimmy Howard had 27 stops in his first action since being sidelined for two-plus weeks with a broken right index finger.
NHL – Datsyuk expected to miss 2 weeks after surgery
Detroit Red Wings star Pavel Datsyuk is expected to miss two weeks after undergoing arthroscopic surgery Tuesday to remove fragments from his right knee. Datsyuk is the Red Wings' leading scorer with 59 points. “Pav's been out before and he's a huge part of our team but we're going to need guys to step up,” goalie Jimmy Howard said after Detroit's 2-1 loss at Chicago on Tuesday night. “This is an opportunity for other guys now to play in a role maybe they're not used to playing in, maybe getting some more ice time, and they're going to find a way to get it done for us.” Detroit has won an NHL-record 23 consecutive home games. Datsyuk helped keep that streak going when he scored with 5 seconds left Friday to beat Nashville. The forward was ninth in the NHL in scoring through Monday. “We've just got to play,” coach Mike Babcock said. “Today had nothing to do with no Pavel. We didn't play.”
NHL – Toews misses game against Red Wings
Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews was scratched from last night’s game against visiting Detroit due to an upper-body injury. The team says only that it is unrelated to the wrist injury that kept him out of the All-Star game. The veteran center leads the Blackhawks with 29 goals. He is second on the team with 57 points.
NHL – Lightning, Avalanche, Red Wings make 3-team deal

Tampa Bay sent forward Steve Downie to the Avalanche for defenseman Kyle Quincey. The Lightning then dealt Quincey to the Red Wings for a first-round pick and Piche. Quincey was originally a 4th round pick by the Red Wings in the 2003 draft. The moves were announced on Tuesday.

MLB – La Russa visiting with Tigers at spring training
Tony La Russa is back at spring training, visiting with the Detroit Tigers. La Russa, who retired after managing the St. Louis Cardinals to the World Series title last year, says he's interested in learning more about the inner workings of a front office. He's known Detroit general manager Dave Dombrowski for over three decades, so he's spending some time with the Tigers. La Russa and Detroit manager Jim Leyland are also close. The two took the field together at the start of Tuesday's workout. La Russa, dressed casually in jeans, seemed content to stay off to the side while Leyland addressed the team, but he did share a hug with Tigers reliever Octavio Dotel, who played for the Cardinals last year.
