Tigers 5, Mariners 4 – Tigers top Mariners 5-4
Jose Iglesias hit an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Detroit Tigers a 5-4 victory over Seattle on Sunday after the Mariners lost standout second baseman Robinson Cano to a fractured hand.  Niko Goodrum homered and had three hits for the Tigers. His single in the ninth allowed JaCoby Jones to advance to third with nobody out, and Iglesias followed with a single up the middle off Juan Nicasio (1-2). Kyle Seager hit a solo homer in the second for Seattle, but Cano left an inning later after being hit in the right hand by a pitch. The Mariners said he has a fractured fifth metacarpal. James Paxton allowed three runs and six hits in six innings for the Mariners in his first start since throwing a no-hitter Tuesday at Toronto. The Tigers were nowhere near full strength, with slugger Miguel Cabrera on the disabled list and regular starters Nicholas Castellanos and Jeimer Candelario also out of the lineup, but the bottom of their order came through. Shane Greene (2-2) pitched a scoreless ninth for the win.

White Sox 5, Cubs 3 – Davidson helps White Sox rally past Cubs 5-3
Matt Davidson hit a solo homer and a tiebreaking sacrifice fly, helping Lucas Giolito and the Chicago White Sox salvage the finale of their weekend series against the crosstown Cubs with a 5-3 win on Sunday. Giolito (2-4) matched a career high with seven walks, tossed three wild pitches and hit a batter, but pitched two-hit ball for 5 2/3 innings in his first victory since April 26. The right-hander allowed three runs and struck out three while lowering his ERA to 6.91 for the season. The White Sox (10-27) stopped a seven-game slide and became the last major league team to reach 10 wins. Yolmer Sanchez, Nicky Delmonico and Leury Garcia each drove in a run, and Bruce Rondon finished a nearly perfect relief effort for his first save.  Javier Baez drove in two more runs for the Cubs (21-16), who had won five in a row. Kyle Hendricks (3-3) surrendered four runs, three earned, and six hits in six innings.

MLB – Baseball warns Cubs’ Zobrist about his cleats
Major League Baseball has warned Ben Zobrist of the Chicago Cubs against wearing black cleats. Zobrist posted a letter from the league office on Instagram saying the cleats he wore May 2 against Colorado on May 2 violated MLB’s collective bargaining agreement. Manager Joe Maddon backed Zobrist, saying he was wearing the cleats for the right reasons.

Golf – Simpson completes a big win at Players Championship
Webb Simpson navigated his way through a few mistakes but not too much stress to win The Players Championship on Sunday. Staked to a seven-shot lead, no one got closer than four shots of Simpson, even after a double bogey on the 18th hole when his only concern was finishing the hole. He closed with a 1-over 73 for a four-shot victory and his biggest win since the 2012 U.S. Open at Olympic Club. Tiger Woods made another big run. So did Jason Dufner, Jimmy Walker and Danny Lee. None could do enough to catch Simpson during record scoring in the final Players Championship in May. Justin Thomas shot a 66 and tied for 11th, which was more than enough to move to No. 1 in the world.

NFL – Former Seahawks, LA Rams coach Chuck Knox dies at 86
Chuck Knox, the veteran NFL coach who led the Seattle Seahawks for nine years and took the Los Angeles Rams to three straight NFC championship games, has died. He was 86. Knox died Saturday evening, the Seahawks confirmed Sunday. Knox went 186-147-1 during 22 seasons as an NFL head coach, including two stints with the Rams. He won five straight NFC West titles from 1973-77, and he returned in 1992 for the franchise’s final three seasons in Los Angeles before its move to St. Louis. The Pennsylvania native left the Rams in 1978 for the Buffalo Bills. After five seasons, he took over the Seahawks in 1983 and immediately led the franchise to its first playoff berth and the AFC title game.

Olympics – Japanese officials remain vague about Sapporo Winter Olympic bid
Japanese officials are being vague about the city of Sapporo’s bid to land the Winter Olympics. Sapporo Mayor Katsuhiro Akimoto and Tsunekazu Takeda, an IOC member and head of the Japanese Olympic Committee, met Monday in Tokyo to quell rumors that Sapporo was dropping out of bidding for the 2026 edition. But they described conditions that hinted that 2030 is better for the city’s planning. City officials last week said a bid for the 2030 Olympics seems more likely than pursuing 2026. Sapporo is one of seven bidders in preliminary talks with the International Olympic Committee about 2026. The other interested cities are: Stockholm, Sweden; Calgary, Canada; Sion, Switzerland; Milan-Turin, Italy; Erzurum, Turkey; Graz, Austria. The IOC has not ruled out awarding 2026 and 2030 at the same meeting.
