Rangers 7, Tigers 6 – Rangers rally late to beat Tigers 7-6 on Profar’s RBI triple
Jurickson Profar hit a tiebreaking RBI triple, Nomar Mazara homered again and the Texas Rangers beat the Detroit Tigers 7-6 on Monday night after a strange game-deciding seventh inning. Delino DeShields and Shin-Soo Choo both scored from first in the seventh. DeShields reached on a two-out error and then raced around the bases when Choo singled on a grounder that trickled off the outstretched glove of second baseman Dixon Machado into shallow right field. Profar followed with his big hit.

Cubs 14, Marlins 2 – Cubs stop 5-game slide with 14-2 win over Marlins
Ian Happ homered from both sides of the plate, and the Chicago Cubs stopped a five-game slide by routing the Miami Marlins 14-2 on Monday night. The Cubs collected 15 hits after scoring three or fewer runs in 10 of the previous 11 games. Kris Bryant and Javier Baez connected, and Happ finished with five RBIs. Kyle Hendricks also provided a lift for Chicago by pitching eight innings of two-run ball. The Cubs dropped their previous two on game-ending hits in St. Louis.

MLB – White Sox reliever Danny Farquhar released from hospital
Chicago White Sox reliever Danny Farquhar has been released from a hospital, and a doctor who treated the 31-year-old right-hander expects he will pitch again but not this season. Farquhar collapsed in the dugout with a brain hemorrhage caused by a ruptured aneurysm during a home game against Houston on April 20. He had surgery the following day.  His doctor said he won’t clear him to throw again this season.

MLB – Cubs put RHP Yu Darvish on DL with illness
The Chicago Cubs have placed struggling right-hander Yu Darvish on the 10-day disabled list with the flu. The 31-year-old Darvish is 0-3 with a 6.00 ERA in his first season with Chicago after finalizing a $126 million, six-year contract in February. He was scheduled to start Tuesday night against Miami, but the Cubs provided no word on a replacement. The DL stint for Darvish was made retroactive to Friday. The team said it will announce a corresponding move on Tuesday.

NBA – Van Gundy won’t return to Pistons as coach or team president
Stan Van Gundy will not return to the Detroit Pistons as coach or president of basketball operations.  The Pistons announced Van Gundy’s departure Monday, with owner Tom Gores saying in a statement that the team has not progressed over the past two seasons. Gores said Van Gundy wanted to return for a fifth season with the team.  The Pistons went 39-43 this season, missing the playoffs for the third time in four years under Van Gundy. They’ve made the postseason just once in the past nine years, and even a blockbuster trade for Blake Griffin wasn’t enough to salvage 17-18.

NBA – Detroit Pistons providing money for music education efforts
Detroit Pistons officials have announced financial support for music and education programs for children in the city. The Pistons said Monday team owner Tom Gores, Vice Chairman Arn Tellem and the Detroit Pistons Foundation are contributing through a multi-year partnership with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. The money supports efforts to create a youth percussion ensemble and subsidizes symphony concert tickets for fourth-grade students in Detroit’s public schools. Funding also will go to the Sphinx Organization to support the nonprofit organization’s annual Sphinx Honors Competition for young black and Latino musicians. Officials say the Pistons’ involvement is expected to bring hundreds more students into the competition. Financial terms were not disclosed.

NFL – Players’ union files grievance on behalf of Reid
The NFL players’ union has filed a non-injury grievance on behalf of free agent safety Eric Reid.  Considered one of the top safeties in the league, Reid played out his contract with San Francisco last season. He has been a strong supporter of former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who in 2016 became the first player to kneel during the anthem to protest police brutality and racial inequality.  The NFLPA cites one team appearing “to have based its decision not to sign a player based on the player’s statement that he would challenge the implementation of a club’s policy prohibiting demonstration” during the national anthem.

NFL – Georgia Southern honors NFL player killed by drunken driver
Georgia Southern University has honored Indianapolis Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson, an alumnus killed by a drunken driver in February. News outlets report Jackson’s parents, Wesley and Mary Jackson, were presented with his honorary bachelor of science degree during Saturday’s commencement ceremony. Wesley Jackson yelled “Georgia” as they left the stage, and was met by a “Southern” from the crowd. The 26-year-old and his Uber driver, 54-year-old Jeffrey Monroe, were killed in Indiana when authorities say they were struck by 37-year-old Manuel Orrego-Savala. Authorities say Orrego-Savala was living in the U.S. illegally and didn’t have a license. Jackson was an Atlanta native who walked on to Georgia Southern’s football team. He was signed by the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted rookie in 2015, and joined the Colts later that year.
