UC Davis was a winner in its first-ever NCAA Tournament game. Chima Moneke scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Aggies beat North Carolina Central, 67-63 at Dayton. Brynton Lemar scored 15 points and Lawrence White added 14 to help UC Davis earn a first-round meeting with top seed Kansas in the Midwest Regional.
USC 75, Providence 71
USC has advanced by turning a 17-point, second-half deficit into a
75-71 win against Providence. Bennie Boatwright scored a career-high 24 points to help USC avenge its one-point loss to the Friars in the opening round of last year’s NCAA Tournament. Jordan McLaughlin had 18 points for the Trojans, who will face SMU in the East Regional.

Former Michigan Wolverine J.T. Compher scored his first NHL goal, Calvin Pickard stopped 27 shots and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Detroit Red Wings 3-1 on Wednesday night. Matt Duchene scored his first goal in 12 games and Carl Soderberg added his first in 18 games as the NHL-worst Avalanche won at home for the third time in four tries. They are 11-22-2 at the Pepsi Center this season. Andreas Athanasiou scored for the Red Wings, who, like their once-hated rival, are well out of the playoff hunt. Jimmy Howard made 26 saves in his second start since returning from a knee injury that had kept him out since Dec. 20.

NHL – Blackhawks C Artem Anisimov sidelined by left leg injury
Blackhawks center Artem Anisimov will be sidelined for three to four weeks with a left leg injury. Anisimov got hurt in the first period of Chicago’s 4-2 win at Montreal on Tuesday night. He had to be helped from the ice after Canadiens forward Alexander Radulov fell on the back of his leg in a corner behind the Chicago goal. Coach Joel Quenneville said Anisimov was day to day after the victory against the Canadiens. He provided a longer timetable for Anisimov’s return on Wednesday. The Blackhawks have won nine of 11 heading into Thursday night’s game against Ottawa. With Anisimov out, rookie Nick Schmaltz likely will center Chicago’s second line with wingers Patrick Kane and Artemi Panarin. Anisimov has 22 goals and a career-high 45 points in 64 games this season.

The Utah Jazz held Detroit to 35 points in the first half and went on to a 97-83 victory in their final game at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Gordon Hayward had 25 points, eight rebounds and six assists, while Rudy Gobert had 12 points, nine rebounds and four blocks. Utah won for the sixth time in seven games, but a late rally by Detroit forced Utah to use their starters late with a game Thursday night in Cleveland. Aron Baynes had 12 points and 12 rebounds for Detroit, which lost for the second straight night and is in danger of falling back out of playoff position in the Eastern Conference. The Pistons lost 128-96 in Cleveland on Tuesday.
Pacers 98, Hornets 77 – George scores 39 points, Pacers roll past Hornets 98-77
Paul George made six 3-pointers and scored 27 of his season high 39 points in the second half, and the Pacers knocked off the Hornets 98-77, keeping Indiana in the middle of the Eastern Conference playoff race. Charlotte and Indiana went into halftime knotted at 42. Less than 24 hours earlier, the Pacers blew a lead on the road and lost to the Knicks. Now, it appeared Indiana was on the verge of losing a second consecutive game and sliding to the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings. Monta Ellis scored 16 points for the Pacers.
Grizzlies 98, Bulls 91 – Conley, Gasol lead Grizzlies over Bulls 98-91
Mike Conley and Marc Gasol each scored 27 points to lead the Memphis Grizzlies to a 98-91 win against the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday night. Conley and Gasol scored 18 of the team’s 24 points in the fourth quarter as the Grizzlies held off the Bulls, who lost for the sixth time in seven games. Memphis, which had lost five straight before winning Monday, earned its second straight win. Chicago never led in the second half, but Nikola Mirotic had a pair of tying 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. Both were answered by Gasol, his teammate on the Spanish national team. The Bulls were without Dwyane Wade down the stretch after he injured his right elbow with 8:34 remaining. He did not return. Rajon Rondo scored 17 points to lead Chicago.

NFL – Patriots re-sign coveted Pro Bowl LB Dont’a Hightower
The New England Patriots have retained one of their top defensive players. The agent for Dont’a Hightower says the Pats and the linebacker have agreed to a four-year, $43.5 million package. The 27-year-old Hightower had free agent visits with the Jets and Steelers before deciding to stay with New England. Hightower has helped New England win two Super Bowls in his five NFL seasons. He has 372 tackles and 17 sacks since being a first-round pick out of Alabama in 2012.
NASCAR – NASCAR does not penalize Busch or Logano for Vegas fight
NASCAR has declined to penalize Kyle Busch, Joey Logano and their crews for Sunday’s post-race scuffle at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. NASCAR says the sport was built on the kind of racing that Busch and Logano did on the final laps of the Monster Energy race. Busch confronted Logano after the race and threw a punch before being knocked to the ground by Team Penske crew members.

Birmingham Detroit Country Day’s Destiny Pitts has been named The Associated Press Class B girls Player of the Year in Michigan. The senior is a four-time all-state team member who averaged 25 points, six rebounds and three assists a game this season. The Yellowjackets went 67-7 in the regular season in her four years. She’s joined on the Class B first team by Country Day teammate Kaela Webb, Grand Rapids Catholic Central’s Sophia Karasinski, Ypsilanti Arbor Prep’s Adrienne Anderson, Dearborn Heights Robichaud’s Kamaria McDaniel, Williamston’s Maddie Watters, Ithaca’s Kayla Belles, Flint Southwestern’s Tyeshia Bowers, Marshall’s Nikki Tucker and Bay City John Glenn’s Kalle Martinez. The 2016-17 AP All-State Basketball Team is selected by Michigan sportswriters and broadcasters. Frankenmuth’s Tom Keller is the Class B Coach of the Year.

- Elijah Baxter sank a three point jumper at the buzzer to lift Benton Harbor to a 60-57 Regional Championship win over Wayland. Baxter’s game winner came near the right sideline as time expired. Roy Anderson led the Tigers with a game high 19 points, Shawn Hopkins added 18. Benton Harbor advances to face Spring Lake in the state quarterfinals Tuesday night in Caledonia.
