NFL – Raiders file papers to move from Oakland to Las Vegas
The paperwork has been filed by the Oakland Raiders for a move to Las Vegas. Clark County Commission Chairman Steve Sisolak told The Associated Press that he spoke with the Raiders about the proposed move. Sisolak is part of an 11-member panel that was appointed by Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval to study plans for a proposal backed by billionaire casino owner Sheldon Adelson’s company, Las Vegas Sands Corp., to build a domed stadium to lure the Raiders to town. Any relocation to Las Vegas must be approved by three-fourths of NFL team owners. The proposed 65,000-seat domed stadium is expected to cost $1.9 billion, including $750 million in hotel tax revenue, $650 million from Adelson, and $500 million from the Raiders and the NFL. Any relocation to Las Vegas must be approved by three-fourths of NFL team owners.

NFL – Surgery for Luck
Colts quarterback Andrew Luck has undergone surgery on his right shoulder. He had been bothered by the shoulder the past two seasons. Team owner Jim Irsay announced on Twitter that Luck was recovering from the outpatient procedure and that Luck will be ready for the 2017 season. Luck was listed on the Colts injury report throughout this season with a sore throwing shoulder and missed several practices. Nonetheless, he threw for 4,240 yards and 31 touchdowns this past season after signing a six-year, $140 million contract in June.

NFL – Chicago Bears hire 3 assistant coaches
The Chicago Bears have hired three new assistant coaches. Jeremiah Washburn replaces Dave Magazu as offensive line coach. Washburn last served as assistant offensive line coach under Adam Gase with the Miami Dolphins. Curtis Modkins was hired as running backs coach. Modkins has coached for 22 years, including nine with the San Francisco 49ers. Prior to that, he spent three seasons as the Detroit Lions’ running backs coach.

NBA – NBA All-Star starters announced
The NBA starting lineups for the All-Star game will include two members of both Cleveland and Golden State. Cavaliers stars LeBron James and Kyrie Irving were selected to the Eastern Conference starting lineup and will be joined by Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jimmy Butler of Chicago and DeMar DeRozan of Toronto. Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant head up a Western Conference starting quintet that includes Houston’s James Harden, Anthony Davis of New Orleans and Kawhi Leonard of San Antonio.

FIFA – British man dies on 2022 World Cup stadium site in Qatar
Organizers of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar say a British man has died working at a stadium which will be a venue for the event. The organizers say the unnamed 40-year-old man died on Thursday working at Khalifa International Stadium, which is due to stage games up to the quarterfinal stage in 2022. A statement from Qatar said “the relevant authorities have been notified and the next of kin has been informed. An immediate investigation into the cause of this fatality is underway and further details will be released in due course. The Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy shares our deepest condolences with the family for their loss.”

#3 Maryland 83, Michigan 70 – Jones scores 25 as No. 3 Maryland beats Michigan 83-70
Brionna Jones had 25 points and 10 rebounds, and Number 3 Maryland pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat Michigan 83-70 Thursday night for its sixth straight victory.  It was the ninth straight double-double for Jones and 13th for the season. The 6-foot-4 senior made 12 of 16 shots and helped the Terrapins (18-1, 6-0 Big Ten) finish with a 43-33 rebounding advantage. Shatori Walker-Kimbrough scored 17 and freshman Kaila Charles added 16 for Maryland, the only team unbeaten in conference play. The two-time defending Big Ten champions outscored Michigan 19-6 in the final quarter. Katelynn Flaherty led Michigan (15-5, 4-2) with 30 points in 36 minutes. She moved into third place on the school career list with 1,666.  Kysre Gondrezick had 13 points.

#6 Notre Dame 83, Boston College 69 – Mabrey, Turner lead No. 6 Notre Dame women past BC 80-69
Marina Mabrey scored 21 points, Brianna Turner had 19 and sixth-ranked Notre Dame bounced back from a loss earlier this week with an 80-69 victory over Boston College on Thursday.  Coming off a 71-69 loss at Tennessee on Monday, the Fighting Irish (17-3, 5-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) picked up the tempo at the start of the second half, turning an eight-point lead to 54-37 in the opening 2 ½ minutes.  The Irish shot 75 percent (12 of 16) and outscored BC 31-15 in the third quarter. From there, they coasted to their fifth win in six games and 10th in 12 since an 11-point loss against No. 1 Connecticut on December 7.

Tennis – Day 5 at Melbourne
Defending champion Angelique Kerber finally had an easy match at the Australian Open. Kerber won the first eight games of a 6-0, 6-4 win over Kristyna Pliskova. The top-ranked Kerber had been extended to three sets in her first two matches at Melbourne. Next up for the German is American Coco Vandeweghe, who is in the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the third time following a three-set win over Eugenie Bouchard.

PGA – Lefty looks good in first event since surgery
Phil Mickelson has made his 2017 PGA debut after recovering from two sports hernia surgeries. Mickelson shot a 4-under 68 in the opening round of the CareerBuilder Challenge at La Quinta Country Club. The 46-year-old Mickelson underwent his second procedure on Dec. 12, two months after tying for eighth in the season-opening Safeway Open. Tour rookie Dominic Bozzelli fired an 8-under 64 on the Stadium Course at PGA West, the most difficult of the three courses used in the event. Former tournament champion Jhonattan Vegas is in a three-way tie for second with Harold Varner III, Hudson Swafford and Patton Kizzire at minus-7.
