Angels 5, Tigers 0 – Former Tiger Jefry Marte drives in three in Angels victory
Former Tiger Jefry Marte had three RBI and Tyler Skaggs shut down the Detroit offense in the Los Angeles Angels’ 5-0 victory on Sunday. After scoring 35 runs in the four games before this series, the Tigers were limited to six runs in the three-game weekend set against the Angels. It is the ninth time this season the Tigers have been shut out. The victory gave the Angels back-to-back road series wins for the first time this season. Marte hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning off Anibal Sanchez (7-13) for the first runs of the game. It was Marte’s 10th home run of the season and first since Aug. 17. He played in 33 games with the Tigers last season. The Angels added three more runs in the sixth, on sacrifice flies by Andrelton Simmons and Marte, plus an RBI double by Nick Buss. Skaggs (2-3), pitching for the first time at Comerica Park, allowed just two hits while striking out six in six innings.
White Sox 4, Mariners 1 – Rodon, Morneau, Cabrera lead White Sox past Mariners, 4-1
Carlos Rodon pitched into the seventh inning, Justin Morneau had a two-run single and Melky Cabrera drove in a run and scored twice to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 4-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday. Jose Abreu also drove in a run to help Chicago, which took three of four in the series and has won six of eight. Robinson Cano hit a solo homer, his 30th, and Kyle Seager had three hits for the Mariners. Rodon (5-8) allowed the run and five hits in six-plus innings before giving way to the bullpen. Chris Beck and Dan Jennings worked out a jam in the seventh, Nate Jones pitched a 1-2-3 eighth and David Robertson got the last three outs for his 33rd save in 39 chances. Seattle starter Taijuan Walker (4-9) allowed four runs on four hits in 7 1/3 innings. He also hit three batters.
Dodgers 1, Cubs 0 – Stewart, 4 relievers throw 4-hitter; Dodgers beat Cubs 1-0
Brock Stewart and four relievers combined on a four-hitter and Andrew Toles scored on a fielder’s choice in the eighth inning, leading the Los Angeles Dodgers over Jon Lester and the Chicago Cubs 1-0 on Sunday. Stewart struck out eight over five innings of two-hit ball, and then Jesse Chavez, Grant Dayton, Joe Blanton and Kenley Jansen closed up shop. Blanton (5-2) got the win and Jansen got three outs for his 39th save. With one out in the eight, pinch-hitter Toles was hit by a pitch, and then Trevor Cahill (3-4) threw away Howie Kendrick’s short roller, allowing Toles to reach third. After an intentional walk and a strikeout, Adrian Gonzalez hit a soft grounder toward third, and Javier Baez double-clutched before throwing too late for a force play at second base, allowing Toles to score. Lester struck out six and pitched three-hit ball over six innings. Los Angeles also had just four hits.

MLB – White Sox CF Eaton exits game with bruised right forearm
Chicago White Sox center fielder Adam Eaton left Sunday’s game against the Seattle Mariners in the fifth inning with a bruised right forearm after being hit by a pitch. X-rays were negative and he is listed as day-to-day. Eaton initially stayed in the game after being hit by Seattle starter Taijuan Walker leading off the fourth inning and scored Chicago’s first run later in the inning. Eaton played the field in the top of the fifth, but was pinch hit for in the bottom half of the inning by J.B. Shuck. He finished 0 for 1 with the hit by pitch and a run scored.
NFL – Bears waive RB Perry, part with 9 other players
The Chicago Bears have waived running back and special teams player Senorise Perry and parted with nine other players. Perry led the Bears with 17 special-teams tackles in 2014 after signing as an undrafted free agent. He missed last season because of a foot injury. The Bears waived defensive lineman Keith Browner, receiver Kieran Duncan, receiver Derek Keaton, offensive lineman John Kling, receiver Darrin Peterson, defensive back Joel Ross, tight end Gannon Sinclair and offensive lineman Martin Wallace on Sunday. They also terminated the contract of vested veteran fullback Darrell Young. The moves trimmed Chicago’s roster to 80 active players. Rosters must be at 75 players by Tuesday.
NASCAR – Larson takes advantage of late restart for first Cup victory
Kyle Larson took the lead on a restart with nine laps to go and went on to win at Michigan for his first Sprint Cup victory. The 24-year old held off Chase Elliott to win by 1.48 seconds. Brad Keselowski was third. Larson’s victory snapped a 99-race losing streak for Chip Ganassi Racing. It also secured a spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup with two races left in the regular season.
NCAA Football – Western Michigan football players face 3 criminal charges
Two Western Michigan football players were kicked off the team Sunday after a prosecutor announced they would face three criminal charges for allegedly pushing their way into a woman’s apartment and robbing her. Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting says his office has authorized charges of armed robbery, first-degree home invasion and larceny in a building against linebacker Ron George and wide receiver Bryson White. Getting says if convicted on all the charges, they could face life in prison. The two remain in custody pending their arraignment Monday. Getting says he doesn’t know if either has hired an attorney. The two men are accused of using a gun and knife to rob a woman about 9 p.m. Friday. Western Michigan coach P.J. Fleck said he would have no further comment.
Golf – PGA – Reed wins FedEx opener
Patrick Reed has picked up a double victory. His win in The Barclays was not only his first of the season, but secured a spot for him on the US Ryder Cup team. Reed shot a 1-under 70 to finish 9-under par in the first of the four FedEx Cup playoff tournaments. That was good for a one shot win over Sean O’Hare and Emiliano Grillo (eh-mee-lee-AN’-oh GREE’-yoh). Brandt Snedecker and Zach Johnson also earned Ryder Cup berths with their finishes.
Golf – Champions – Langer wins in playoff
Bernhard Langer made a three-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to defeat Woody Austin and Kevin Sutherland for the title at the Champions Tour Boeing Classic. Langer was five shots back at the turn, before shooting a 6-under 30 on the back nine to join the playoff at 13-under par. The trio all birdied the par-5 18th hole to end regulation. But only Langer did it again in the playoff to win the tournament for the second time, a day after his 59th birthday.
Golf – LPGA – Thai star wins in LPGA play
Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn shot a final round 6-under 66 to win the LPGA’s Canadian Pacific Women’s Open by four shots. It was her fifth win of the season, all in the last 10 events. Jutanugarn’s 23-under total tied the tournament record. Sei Young Kim shot a 65 to finish second.
LLWS – U.S. entry wins World Series
Ryan Harlost led Endwell, New York to a 2-1 win over South Korea to win the Little League World Series title Harlost struck out eight and allowed five hits in six innings. Endwell becomes the first U.S. winner since Huntington Beach, California, in 2011, and gave New York its first championship since 1964. Conner Rush had the New York team’s only RBI to give Endwell the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Harlost scored the deciding run on a passed ball.

Elena Delle Donne had 18 points and eight rebounds to help the Chicago Sky beat the Dallas Wings 92-85 on Sunday. Courtney Vandersloot added 15 points and nine assists, Cappie Pondexter scored 14 and Erika de Souza had 12 for Chicago. The Sky (13-13) had an 18-1 run spanning the first and second quarters to make it 40-16 on de Souza’s basket with 6:09 left in the first half. Odyssey Sims scored 22 points and Skylar Diggins added 16 to lead Dallas, which dropped its eighth in a row.
Olympics – Gabby Douglas hospitalized, misses MTV Video Music Awards
Olympic gymnastics star Gabby Douglas was hospitalized Sunday night, forcing her to miss a scheduled appearance with her U.S. teammates at the MTV Video Music Awards. “Gabby is back in the hospital tonight being treated for a seriously infected past mouth injury. She continues to have deep swelling and adverse reactions to medications,” publicist Lesley Burbridge said in an email to The Associated Press. Earlier Sunday, 20-year-old Douglas posted on social media that she was out of the hospital. Douglas had been scheduled to present an award alongside teammates Simone Biles, Laurie Hernandez, Madison Kocian and Aly Raisman at Madison Square Garden.
Study: Playing with sports concussion doubles recovery time
Continuing to play despite a concussion doubles recovery time for teen athletes and leads to worse short-term mental function than in those immediately removed from action, a study found. It’s billed as the first to compare recovery outcomes for athletes removed from a game or practice compared with those who aren’t. The study was small, involving 69 teens treated at a University of Pittsburgh Medical Center concussion clinic, but the results bolster evidence supporting the growing number of return-to-play laws and policies nationwide. The study was published Monday in the journal Pediatrics.
